    Week 156: F.A.S.T.

    Week 156: F.A.S.T.

Results may be posted until April 18th, 2016.

Let's all remember Todd Louis Green by shooting the FAST! This one's for you, Todd!!!

    Designed by: Todd Louis Green
    Range: 7 yards
Target: 8" circle and 3x5 card (see http://pistol-training.com/wp-conten...ast-target.pdf for a downloadable target; this target must be printed on an 8.5x14 "legal" sheet of paper)
Start position: concealed, hands relaxed at sides (see below for alternatives)
    Rounds fired: 18

Pistol begins with exactly two rounds in the gun. Draw should be from underneath legitimate concealment (see below for alternatives). Arms must be relaxed with hands at your sides (not on the gun).

    1. On the buzzer, draw and fire two rounds at the 3x5 card.
    2. Reload from slidelock/empty gun.
    3. Fire four rounds to the 8" circle.

Repeat for a total of three runs (18 rounds).

Do not fire extra rounds. Shots intended for the 3x5 that hit the 8", or vice versa, count as misses.

    Scoring is as follows:

Total time + 2s penalty for each 3x5 shot missed, + 1s penalty for each 8" shot missed

The FAST is intended to be shot from legitimate concealment or with a duty/retention holster. Even when shot with a duty holster, start position is arms at sides (not "interview" stance). Score is modified as follows based on carry method:

    Concealed: no penalty

Retention holster with closed (snap or velcro) mag pouches: 0.5 second bonus (subtraction) per 6-shot run

Retention holster with open top mag pouches: no penalty or bonus

ALS, SERPA, or Thumb Drive (or similar) holster without concealment: 0.5 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run

Open top holster without concealment: 3 second penalty (addition) per 6-shot run

If your range does not allow drawing from a holster, begin with the gun on a table with no round in the chamber (two in the magazine). On the start signal, pick up the gun, rack the slide, and shoot the drill. Reload from underneath concealment.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Starting position (concealed, duty, open holster, or table start)
    Type of holster (if applicable)
Time and hits for string 1
Time and hits for string 2
Time and hits for string 3
    Aggregate score
    Anything you noticed

Hope it is okay that I actually fired this on Tuesday for the same reason you stated.

Pistol: Glock 22 with 9mm conversion, Defoor sights (black rear, painted front), open front vest
    Starting position: Concealed
Type of holster: Safariland ALS OWB
Time and hits for string 1: 8.09 Clean 6 hits
Time and hits for string 2: 7.61 Clean 6 hits
Time and hits for string 3: 7.08 Clean 6 hits
    Aggregate score: 22.78
Anything you noticed: Accuracy was good, now need to work on speeding up and trimming time where I can - draw, reloads and sight acquisition. I think dry fire has been paying off some.

    Shot this yesterday.

    Pistol: S&W SD9VE
    Start Position: Concealed under t-shirt
Type of Holster: Theis Holster IWB
    Time/Hits for 1st Attempt:5.26/-1H, -1B (8.26)
    Time/Hits for 2nd Attempt:5.42/Clean
    Time/Hits for 3rd Attempt:5.13/Clean
    Aggregate Score (w/penalties): 18.81
Notes: Grip the gun hard, work on reloads.

I only shoot this drill once or twice a year and use it to track performance improvements. I last shot it in January of 2015 and my fastest clean run was 5.81.

    Thanks for this Gabe!

Todd was by far the largest influence on my shooting, and although I don't normally post in these threads I would like to this time in honor of him.

    Pistol: Glock 19
    Start Position: Concealed AIWB
    Type of Holster: JM AIWB
    Time/Hits for 1st Attempt: 4.48 / Clean
    Time/Hits for 2nd Attempt: 4.33 / Clean
    Time/Hits for 3rd Attempt: 4.29 / Clean
    Aggregate Score (w/penalties): 13.1
Notes: I tend to hesitate and get a better sight picture than is needed on my first draw of the day, always costing me a couple tenths of a second. Something I need to work on for sure.

    RIP - TLG

Shot this yesterday during the excellent GreenOps Defensive Pistol class and...I sucked out loud. 6.5seconds, 2 misses, then another that was around 6.7 with one miss (I think). Anyway, the entire class did a F.A.S.T. volley after running the test in memory of Todd. I did redeem myself on another class evaluation/test.

You're welcome! But Tom_Jones asked for the FAST to be next before I got around to thinking of it myself, so he probably deserves the thanks.

    And great shooting!!!

Anything you noticed: I had kind of a FAST-Festivus yesterday. I've got a lot of problems with how I did on this, and now you are going to hear about it. Felt like I should have been faster and at least as clean. The two dropped head shots were around half an inch under the 3x5, ugh. Need to take the time to practice slidelock reloads again. For some time now, I have just been doing in-battery reloads in dry practice because they are vastly easier to set up and many more reps can be done. But I need to do some slidelock ones too. I seem to have gotten slower on the FAST compared to where I was last time I spent much time on it. That probably makes sense, actually, because I have mostly been focusing on integrating shooting with movement and barriers, and generally working on the on-demand aspect of my performance, rather than trying to high-fly stand and shoot stuff. I'm definitely going to try these cold again soon.

Also did some bonus variations because fun.

    Three Micro FASTs:

Two FASTs on USPSA Metric targets later in the day:

    Two FASTs on the move:

Three warmed up regular FASTs I shot interspersed with all this other stuff:

    Time and hits for string 1 - 3.44: 1.01, .24 / 1.56 / .23, .20, .20
    Time and hits for string 2 - 3.78: 1.13, .30 / 1.73 / .20, .22, .20
    Time and hits for string 3 - 4.49 (-1B): 1.04, .29 / 1.52 / .22, .22, .20
    Aggregate score: 11.71

    5.47 - 1.89, .53, 2.26, .26, .27, .26 clean
    5.42 - 1.94, .52, 2.26, .25, .25, .20 clean
    5.10 - 1.9, .48, 2.02, .25, .25, .20 clean

    15.99 aggregate

My goal was only to run them clean for Todd. It turns out two of the runs were PR's, my previous was 5.44. I really stepped my dry fire game up over the winter and it apparently payed off. The DSG rig is slick as well.

RIP Todd. Thank you for all that you have done for the shooting world and the indirect influence you had on me as well.
