Quasimodo has been ringing the bells of the cathedral for fifty years,
and finally the priest decides to give him a vacation. Quasi says he
will go, but only after he gets his brother to take over for him. The
next morning, Quasi's brother rings the bell for the first time and is
struck out of the tower by the swinging bell. The townspeople see
this and gather around the dead body. They all ask the priest, "Is
this the Quasimodo that we have all heard about?" The priest replies,
"No, but he is a dead ringer for his brother."

Quasimodo retired. The priest in charge of operations put up notices and ran ads in local paper for a replacement. A veteran of the Napoleonic wars applied for the job. He had lost an arm in combat.
The priest looked at him and shook his head sadly. "My son, we do try to give jobs to those who have suffered for France, but I do not see how you could ring the bells."
The veteran pleaded for a chance to show that the could do the work. The priest relented and led the way to the bell tower. But instead of pulling at the ropes, the man went up the stairs and ladders to the top of the tower, with the priest following out of curiosity. Finally, they reached the top. The veteran backed up to a far corner, set himself, and ran towards one of the bells, leaping into the air and striking it face-first.

The priest looked at the man, astonished. "Very impressive, my child, but can you do it again?"
The veteran got up and staggered back to the same corner and repeated the process. But he was unsteady, he hit the bell with a glancing blow and fell out of the tower, falling to the plaza below and dying on impact. People rushed over to the body, including some policemen. One of the cops looked up and saw the priest looking down. He yelled up to the priest: "Father, do you know this man?"
The priest yelled back: "No, but his face rings a bell."
