Destruction of power supply in winter is certainly endangering lives.

Over 40,000 Moore County, North Carolina residents were powerless on Sunday afternoon after two substations were taken out by gunfire on Saturday night, according to police.

Thankfully the forecast weather for the next week is relatively mild.

Projecting a week or so without power because of gunshots. There's been several discussions about how vulnerable our power grid is. However it's almost always put in reference to something like an EMP strike. Here we are seeing how a bunch of plain old bullets can cause a lot of grief

Not the first time something like this has happened.

On April 16, 2013, an attack was carried out on Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Metcalf transmission substation in Coyote, California, near the border of San Jose. The attack, in which gunmen fired on 17 electrical transformers, resulted in more than $15 million worth of equipment damage, but it had little impact on the station's electrical power supply.
On the morning of April 16, 2013, a team of gunmen, using rifles, opened fire on the Metcalf Transmission Substation, severely damaging 17 transformers.[4][5][6]

    Preparation
    Edit
Prior to the attack, a series of fiber-optic telecommunications cables operated by AT&T were cut by the culprits. Additionally, following the attack, investigators found small piles of rocks near to where the shots had been fired, the type of formations that can be used to scout firing positions.[7][8]

    Timeline
    Edit
12:58 a.m. – AT&T fiber-optic telecommunications cables were cut not far from U.S. Route 101 just outside south San Jose.
1:07 a.m. – Some customers of Level 3 Communications, an Internet service provider, lost service. Cables in its vault near the Metcalf substation were also cut.
1:31 a.m. – A surveillance camera pointed along a chain-link fence around the substation recorded a streak of light that investigators from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office think was a signal from a waved flashlight. It was followed by the muzzle flash of rifles and sparks from bullets hitting the fence.
1:37 a.m. – PG&E received an alarm from motion sensors at the substation, possibly from bullets grazing the fence.
1:41 a.m. – Santa Clara County Sheriff's department received a 911 call about gunfire, sent by an engineer at a nearby power plant that still had phone service.
1:45 a.m. – The first bank of transformers, riddled with bullet holes and having leaked 52,000 US gallons (200,000 l; 43,000 imp gal) of oil, overheated, whereupon PG&E's control center about 90 miles (140 km) north received an equipment-failure alarm.
1:50 a.m. – Another apparent flashlight signal, caught on film, marked the end of the attack. More than 100 expended 7.62×39mm cases were later found at the site.
1:51 a.m. – Law-enforcement officers arrived, but found everything quiet. Unable to get past the locked fence and seeing nothing suspicious, they left.
    3:15 a.m. – A PG&E worker arrived to survey the damage.[7]
    Sophistication of attack
    Edit
Former Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Jon Wellinghoff stated that military experts informed him that the assault looked like a "professional job", noting that no fingerprints were discovered on the empty casings.[7] While Wellinghoff described the attack as "the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred", a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation stated that they did not believe a terrorist organization was responsible.[9]

Henry Waxman, a ranking member of the United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce, stated that the attack was "an unprecedented and sophisticated attack on an electric grid substation with military-style weapons. Communications were disrupted. The attack inflicted substantial damage. It took weeks to replace the damaged parts. Under slightly different conditions, there could have been serious power outages or worse."[8]

This attacked appeared to coincide with a drag queen show being posted on the marquee of a theater in a nearby town.

Fringe elements from both sides of the political spectrum have made comments attempting to link this with the Power Station attack

Interesting, was not aware of that one. Thank you for the info.

Looks like they were able to get the power back on fairly quickly though. These poor people here in NC have to sit for almost a week without power according to the news.

Concealed carrier in Chicago fends off teen robbers who accosted him with a gun, with two of the attackers being shot.

    https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-shoo...shot/12528699/

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three teenagers were injured on the West Side early Monday morning when a concealed carry license holder opened fire on would-be robbers, Chicago police said.

A 56-year-old man was in his vehicle in the 4700-block of West Arthington Street in Lawndale just before 6 a.m., when a vehicle with three male teenagers approached, CPD said.

One of the teens got out of the vehicle, pointed a gun at the victim and demanded his belongings, police said.

A struggle ensued before the victim, a FOID and CCL holder, pulled out his weapon and fired several rounds, according to CPD.

The suspect vehicle tried to drive away, but crashed nearby.

The 15- to 18-year-old driver of that vehicle was shot in the head, and taken to Mt. Sinai hospital in critical condition.

A second teen about the same age was found several blocks away with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was taken to Stroger hospital in serious condition.

A third teen, who was in the backseat of the suspect vehicle, suffered a broken leg in the crash, and was taken to a local hospital in fair condition, police said.

    The man was not hurt.

    Area Four detectives are investigating.

Md. gun shop owner charged in shooting at police vehicle

A man listed as the owner of a Rockville, Maryland, gun shop has been arrested for firing at police early Tuesday.

According to Montgomery County Police, an officer in an unmarked vehicle pulled into the parking lot of Engage Armament, a gun shop on East Gude Drive, shortly after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday when a man ran towards the officer’s car and began shooting.

Police say the officer attempted to drive away, radioed for assistance, and gave a description of the man. The officer turned on his emergency equipment, “signaling that he was a police officer.”

And at that point, according to police, the man stopped, dropped his weapon and was taken into custody.

The man was identified as 42-year-old Andrew S. Raymond of Darnestown. Raymond is listed as the owner of Engage Armament on its website. According to charging documents, when he was put in handcuffs, Raymond said he was sorry for shooting at the officer.

Raymond was charged with first-degree assault and the use of a firearm in a crime of violence. No attorney for Raymond was listed on court documents.

The officer was not hurt, but the car was hit twice.

Charging documents state that police had pulled into the parking lot of Engage Armament as part of a check “due to ongoing burglaries and attempted burglaries of gun shops” both in Montgomery and neighboring counties.

On Nov. 25, Atlantic Guns, a shop on Frederick Avenue in Rockville, had been targeted by thieves who used a car to slam into the building before stealing a number of firearms from the business. The car used in that burglary had been stolen.

the political spectrum isn't a line, but a circle. those at the extremes meet in the middle at the bottom (figuratively, and literally.)

but yea, it wouldn't take much for a handful of determined individuals to cause untold amount of havoc with only a couple well placed and timed incidences.

when it comes to the power grid, there's many well written and detailed articles (and youtube videos) of various major blackouts (ex: 2003 chicago/northeast blackout) that go into sufficient detail of how that whole event went down. instead of it being a semi-controlled (i.e.: automated protection systems doing their job) blackout but an active terrorist action causing damage, imagine how long it could take for something like that to be restored.
