Thread: Situational Awareness/Rule 4 Awareness Prop

    Situational Awareness/Rule 4 Awareness Prop

Here's something we put together using a piece of plywood and an old uniform. The uniform is simply stapled to the wood and can be swapped out with civilian clothes sans rifle. The rifle is a rubber blue gun we painted black.

The scarecrow has multiple uses. We can set it to be in someone's way during movement drills to simulate moving around a partner and to check muzzle discipline and awareness. We can also set it downrange near "real" targets to make sure shooters are aware of their target and what is proximate to it.

    Total cost? Not very much.

Nobody has put a hole in it yet. We aren't using this as some sort of "gotcha" but rather to help shooters acknowledge that "downrange" may not always be nothing but targets. It is basically a more realistic version of what people are usually doing with picture/paper targets.

Any concern that it’s so realistic that it could be confused with a real person? Eg. A person is downrange but someone thinks it’s the dummy?

    We've talked about that.

It should actually work two ways. Makes the shooter more aware of his target and what lies beyond. It should also make the instructor pay more attention to where his shooters are.

Plus we don't plan on using it all the time. Only when working a specific drill and during a fairly specific portion of our carbine class.

Excellent and innovative idea. I could have used such a prop dozens of times when I was actively training people (old retired geezer now).
