    Despite his schtick as a ne’er-do-well bum (which is mostly an act I suspect, he just found his market and nailed it) he’s a very talented musician and singer.

    You guys know it was an English tune written for a gentleman's club and it wasn't really the National Anthem until 1931, right? Before that, My Country tis of Thee and Hail Columbia were stand-ins. The anthem, like America, is ever-changing...

    One of the most interesting places to hear the National Anthem is at the Fort McHenry museum in Baltimore. They have this video presentation on the British attack in a darkened room, concluded by the raising of the blinds over huge windows which of course reveal the giant 1812 style Colors over Fort McHenry itself while the anthem is played. It’s incredibly kitschy - and yet even my hard heart melted for my country again.
