    I saw Pat Macnamara carries a .40 caliber glock 22 for Grizzly defense in the Bob Marshall Wilderness area i was a little surprised at this. https://www.ballisticmag.com/alaskan...-gear-pat-mac/

    That’s not an irrational fear at all. It’s important to never lose sight of the fact that we’re fallible human beings. Having two sets of practiced eyes on the empty chamber of the rifle before the bolt was closed reduced the risk of error to what we agreed was an acceptable level, but could not completely eliminate it. A shotgun carries just like the carbine in this rig btw.

    The risk of getting muzzle to the face in a fall was my main concern. It’s worth experimenting with the Gunbearer to try to eliminate that.

    Why did you find that to be surprising?

    I thought the 10mm glock 20 was the conventional wisdom for defense in grizzly country.

    We’re all about challenging conventional wisdom around here —especially @GJM.

    A Dillingham hunter was mauled by a brown bear on Friday. Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain said in an email that 40-year-old John Casteel was hunting up the Nushagak River, 20 miles by air from Dillingham, when he was mauled.

    Casteel’s aunt, Marjorie Nelson, said he came upon the bear while moose hunting. The bear attacked and Casteel called out to his hunting partner, who shot and killed the bear. His partner sent a satellite message requesting help, saying that Casteel had injuries on his arm and leg. He was conscious but couldn’t move.

    @GJM:

    Do you have any experience with the 45 colt and Bears?
    Back when the "Shooters forum" was a real active forum, there was a fellow who went by "Coldfingers", his real name was Scott. He was an Alaskan guide and swore by the Smith Mountain Gun, and 300 Grain Hardcast Beartooth bullets at 1000fps.
    Granted, this was probably 10 years ago when I modded for the site.

    I'm sure that there are better options than the old Colt, but are there those who use it that you know of, and what are their experiences?

    I don't. However, a flat meplat hard cast at 1,000 FPS or more, in .44/.45 caliber has been killing large animals for years. The Gunsite backcountry class "school solution" was a .44 magnum or .45 LC double action revolver with heavy flat meplat hard cast bullets.

    I have gone to the semi auto for field use because of shooting and carry ergonomics, although the heavy revolver no doubt kills better per shot fired.
