While they aren't as romantic as the traditional treehouse, in almost all cases you're better off building a free-standingnstructure on posts. I grew up building many tree houses and am now in the construction biz, and when it came time for a "treehouse" for our girls inbuilt free standing. I am, however, still embarrassed to say that I built a kit instead of my own design. But coming home from work at night and seeing them out there in the swings makes me happy.

The kits are also much easier for those lacking that particular man skill.

Oak tree. Big. Ass. Oak. Tree.

It's probably 50-60' tall right now, and maybe 2.5- 3' in diameter. Best guess is that it is in the 50-60 year old range.

Gave the kid his choice between tree house and sand box. He wants a tree house. I'll build him a playground fort from a kit, no issues there........ and probably tie them together in some manner. But he was promised a tree house. So a tree house he will get. We made a deal and shook on it, which is as good as a legally binding contract in our house.

You can get much more of what you want with a kind word and a gun, than with a kind word alone.

I just put one up for our kids.

These are some good sites: http://www.thetreehouseguide.com/index.htm, http://treehouses.com/joomla/index.p...tree-selection,
    Some DIY documentation: http://www.bradd.us/treehouse.htm, https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comment...t0&sh=bd6e0f60, https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comment...mw&sh=afdf4d5d, https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comment...km&sh=fc975988, and my favorite: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comment...dn&sh=ed2df461

I built mine to last. I used "garnier limbs" - specialized bolts that go into the tree and the whole structure rests on. Lots of pressure treated lumber and trex for the decking. It cost more than I expected and was about as difficult as I expected - right the edge of my capability.

    It's more of a floating deck: http://i.imgur.com/Lb2VmjM.jpg
