Regarding cruiser ready - what Beattrash said. ^^^
I also noted this in Digiroc's post:
You don't send your dog anyplace you are not planning / willing to follow. Unless you're an asshole and you're sending your dog on a suicide mission.Sending my dog out is sadly no longer an option. The wife's dog is good for hearing things outside that I may not, but hardly effective in scaring someone away.
Insurance is your friend as is staying inside. My favorite going outside for property story in San Antonio was a guy whose car wad being broken into. He ran outside with his hunting bow (probably watching Green Arrow show) and was shot dead.
Remington uses a different (more stout) sear spring in their police guns than in their conventional 870's.
FWIW, we carry our 870's hammer back and safety on. This requires that you hit the action bar release prior to cycling the action. This was done after a number of folks failed to check the chamber before releasing the hammer for a more conventional cruiser ready.

I saw the aftermath of a load of buckshot going through the roof and light bar of a USBP Bronco years ago after an 870 was left in the rack with a round chambered. The claim was it went off by itself during rough off-roading. I have no idea if was an actual slam fire or if something actually got into the trigger guard.
I have seen a slam fire in an M-4 demo'ed at an armorers course. The instructor chambered a primed case and was able to get it to fire via a hard impact to the butt stock.
