If anyone can make a reliable alloy frame 9 mm 1911 it is Wilson. He doesn't post here much anymore but John Johnson the host of ballistic radio has been carrying and working with Wilson 9mm 1911's recently. I believe he had a Wilson professional model, the commander size version and recently got a lightweight full-size railed 1911 9 mm from Wilson. There should be some info and photos on the ballistic radio Facebook page.

I would suggest if you're going to splurge on the Wilson that you exercise the option to get a second barrel fitted in 38 super. It's always nice to have options. I can tell you I was able to find 38 super on the shelf during the post Sandyhook ammo drought.

I'd buy a steel frame gun to practice and compete with. If this will be your ONLY 1911, then it will likely end up seeing a lot of use.

In my experience, a well set up 45 is more mechanically forgiving than any other cartridge.

If you stick with a 9mm, I'd stick with Wilson.

I hadn't thought about a .38 super barrel. That's a great idea and something I'll definitely do. If I was a bottomless pit of money my BBQ gun would be a blued Wilson in .38 super.

Check with Wilson- I think is an extra. $299 or so.

I have a Colt Combat Commander at Ten. Ring Precision going the other way - fitting a spare 9mm barrel to a .38 Super.

It's time for me to be an enabler. Here is some Wilson Porn:

Are cone barrels legal for singlestack? I understand that forward cooking serrations aren't popular with some because of looks, but they come in handy for press checks and malfunction clearances.

Is there truth to a statement that 9 mm 1911 is better served by a shorter 4-4.5 inch slide options? If yes, that could be a better carry choice.

My current EDC is a 9mm Colt Commander. It has proven reliable with the supplied magazines, but I plan to order some of the new generation Wilson Combat 10-round mags as well.

I prefer steel to aluminum frames and my all-steel Commander is pretty easy to carry and conceal.

I concur with others that if you can afford a Wilson Combat gun then it's probably a great way to go.

I honestly don't know if Commander-size guns in 9mm are more reliable than Government models, but I do feel that the Commander is just a better size pistol for 9mm and a longer barrel/slide probably doesn't buy much of a performance gain when it comes to 9mm.
