Danko:
I have attached links to a very basic OUTSIDE the waist band holster (OWB) that would be suitable for range work. It is made out of plastic so that it is fast, secure and will not collapse when you go to reholster. The downside to plastic holsters is that they can be a bit harder on the finish of a gun than leather. I have linked size 9 (SW M&P)and presumed you were right handed.
Holster on sale at 15 ish shipped max)

Belt. For OWB and Range Work, a Wilderness 5 stitch belt/1.5 inches wide will be just fine. I am recommending this model over the orignal because you do not likely need a buckle system that you could emergency rappel with. I am not recommending one our site sponsors because their belts are self described as being optimized for INSIDE the waistband carry. 45ish shipped

I have used all of the recommended items in range/training/class settings over thousands of rounds with both Glock and 1911 platforms. They now serve as my "loaner" gear when I am with a new shooter. My recommendations exceed the intersection of quality/performance/value. I went with Amazon where I could because they ship fast and take stuff back rather easily.
As you have stated, there are hundreds of choices. The ones I have recommended will work until you may decide you want something else.
If you are a price is no object, buy top quality kind of guy for your hobbies/interests right off the bat, I can make a different recommendations. Sometimes the ships time can be longer than with others.
