My friend Clyde, past president of the clan Campbell in the colonies, was a staunch Glenmorangie man.

Since getting into scotch, I've been hitting Compass Box's blends pretty hard. I understand it's a bit of a cult, but these are all rich, complex scotches that run the range from interesting and drinkable (Oak Cross) to deep and rich (Spice Tree) to super peaty but still multi-layered (Flaming Heart).

I've been trying to find a nice single malt that can equal these, because everyone's always very excited for single malts, but I keep coming up short. I've had a number of 12 years that weren't anything special; they tend to just hit one note. The closest to interesting I've found is the Oban 14.

Where should I go from here? I'm not adverse to spending on the right bottle (Flaming Heart is in the $150 range), but am getting pretty gun shy. If I spring for something older, am I going to be buying complexity?

A friend brought some back from Japan a few weeks back, and poured me a glass. It was very nice, I think you will enjoy it.

Forgot to post that I ordered a couple of these Glencairn glasses this week. Never really had a real Whisky glass before so it’s kinda cool to try.

I’m making a simple chili dish with a baked sweet potato on the side; The Boss is in NC this week so it’s just been me and the dog. I think it will go with Scotch ok.

^^^What, you couldn't just throw some haggis together?

Those Glencairn glasses make it taste better. I may have to break mine out later tonight depending on whether our company opts for beer or spirits.

I'm a big fan of peat so I was surprised at how much I liked Glenmorangie.

My favorite single malts, so far, are Lagavulin 16 and Talisker 10. At some point I hope to try other offerings from both distilleries.

For blended scotch it's hard to beat Compass Box. For something very inexpensive with a bit of peat, I like Teacher's Highland Cream.
