    The good stuff? (Scotch)

Reading on the rats & Obama thread, LHS mentioned a litle something about the "good stuff" in regards to Scotch.

Now I'm curious. I'm living in a country where basic Johnny Walker Red can cost $90 a bottle. Thus, when I lay out the cash, I'm interested in what would be worth the expendature.

Johnny Walker Red for $90!!!! Ouch, that hurts.

Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:

    1. Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 yr
    2. Balvenie Double Wood 12 yr
    3. Bruichladdich Rocks (Hell, anything Bruichladdich is tasty!)
    4. Lagavulin
    5. Jura (I just bought this bottle this week. It is sweet with a hint of Peat.)

    +1.

Scotch is like just about anything else, you can spend as much as you like. I don't drink anything super high end (that costs hundreds a bottle or more). All of the bottles below are around fifty bucks a bottle or less near me, except the Lagavulin. It is around 90, which is very steep IMHO. These are decent single malts and readily available to me without resorting to mail order.

    Lagavulin 16 year old

    Talisker

    Laphroaig 10 year old

    Glenmorangie

    Highland Park 12 year old

Honorable mention is the often overlooked Teacher's blended scotch. It has a higher malt content than usual for a blend and therefore more flavor. Unlike a lot of blends, it's good sipped neat or with a little water.

    Blends = mixing
Singles = neat (or with a few drops of distilled water)

But that's just my preference. I hate "ruining" a single malt with ice. If I want it chilled (a rare exception) I'll use whiskey stones.

My picks can be pricey, but life's too short to drink mediocre Scotch.

    Laphroaig (anything double digits aged)

    Balvenie Port Wood

    Balvenie Double Wood

    JW Blue, or Green

Aberlour 18 (when I can get it)

    Aberlour 12 & 16

My two scotches that I always have on hand are lagavulin 16 and aberlour 16. I can find the lagavulin on sale for 60 bucks around me fairly often so when I do, I buy a few. I find myself drinking the aberlour less though as I find the lagavulin to be much tastier. Lagavulin is an islay (really smokey and complex). Where the aberlour is a highland and is pretty sweet and can be refreshing in warmer weather. Always neat, never ice.

Scotch is so subjective and there are so many flavor profiles it is hard to say what is "good."

Not a pure play but if you can get it Yamazaki 12 Single Malt. Very good, around $50 in the states. Leave it to the Japanese to take something and improve it. Super drinkable.

    I'll vouch for that.

I'm not seeing any Cutty Sark or Dewar's here. Surely, you aren't saying there's better scotch than at CVS Pharmacy.
