FWIW, the only thing mentioned on Mann's IMDB that is even remotely close is a pilot for something called Tokyo Vice.

I watched Smuggler's Blues last night and it made me think about how many times an episode should have/could have been a two parter on Miami Vice but it was crammed into one, while others were two part episodes that didn't need to be, like The Golden Triangle which features Thai ninjas and a reveal into Castillo's past. Smuggler's Blues is a story line that I think could have been expanded on, dirty cops ripping off drug dealers, trips to Colombia etc. I can see why they chose it to base the 2006 movie on.

One of the most influential movies ever made was Michael Mann's masterpiece "Heat" which featured this pistol as the gun carried by Al Pacino who played Lt. Vincent Hanna. Lt. Vincent Hana was an LAPD robbery/homicide detective who was tasked with tracking down and stopping the take down crew ran by Neil McCauley who was played by Robert DeNiro.

These two Hollywood Legends were joined by an incredible supporting cast, including Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, Natalie Portman, Danny Trejo, Jeremy Piven, and Henry Rollins. The supremely talented cast was assembled and intense training was put into action to create the most realistic crime drama ever filmed.

For the advanced collector, you have the chance to own the most important firearm in this iconic movie. The Colt 1991A1 that was carried by Al Pacino througout the movie -- and was used to kill Robert DeNiro at the end where there is the showdown between these two Hollywood legends at the airport. No other firearm in the movie "HEAT" was customized like this Colt 1991A1 which stands out as an exceptional gun in a movie full of firearms.

With the advanced age of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro and their body of work being near complete, and the importance of the movie "HEAT" this Colt 1991A1 may be the most exceptional movie firearm available. There will never be a movie that matches the level of excellence attained by "HEAT" and this pistol is by far the most important firearm from this film. With this pistol being in many of the most important scenes including the ending, this pistol is the "Holy Grail" amongst film and firearms collectors.

    .................

There's more details / pics at the link, but what was more interesting was a post on another site by (presumably) a previous buyer. Probably some other interesting guns (and other stuff) on here:

Edited to add: it looks from another auction site that this thing sold for $10,240 in April.

Yep, giving my stirring rendition of DeNiro's bank robbery speech, wherein my attempt to mimic his accent somehow turns into a Bahhston accent...

Apparently the Heat 2 novel is still coming...

    Amazon: Heat 2: A Novel

Michael Mann, four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker and writer-director of Heat, Collateral, Thief, Manhunter, and Miami Vice, teams up with Edgar Award-winning author Meg Gardiner to deliver Mann’s first crime novel — an explosive return to the world and characters of his classic film Heat — an all-new story that illuminates what happened before and after the iconic film.

Described by Michael Mann as both a prequel and sequel to the renowned, critically acclaimed film of the same name, HEAT 2 covers the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Oscar winner Al Pacino) and elite criminals Neil McCauley (Oscar winner Robert De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), and Nate (Oscar winner Jon Voight), and features the same extraordinary ambition, scope, rich characterizations, and attention to detail as the epic film.

This new story leads up to the events of the film and then moves beyond it, featuring new characters on both sides of the law, new high-line heists, and breathtakingly cinematic action sequences. Ranging from the streets of L.A. to the inner sancta of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in Paraguay to a massive drug cartel money-laundering operation just over the border in Mexico, HEAT 2 illuminates the dangerous workings of international crime organizations and the agents who pursue them as it provides a full-blooded portrait of the men and women who inhabit both worlds. Operatic in scope, HEAT 2 is engrossing, moving, and tragic — a masterpiece of crime fiction from one of the most innovative and influential filmmakers in American cinema.

I don't think Mann ever wrote a novel, but his co-author has a bunch of titles under her belt. I don't have good feeling about this book.

I believe this is supposed to start this Thursday with subsequent episodes dropping through the rest of the month.
