Nothing is going on any different. The leading cause of officer fatalities is traffic accidents. On the job officer fatalities have dropped 50% in the last 20 years. The worst year on record ever for officer fatalities was 1974.

The media is doing their damnededst to hysterically promote a perception of a "war on cops unfortunately. The FBI numbers show a steady decline over the years though.

My thoughts are with his family. RIP.

Agree 100%. The media is making it sound like a "new" phenomenon. It's not but the one good thing about it is people are actually starting to take note of the fact these guys on our streets protecting us are in danger every single day. I have seen a new appreciation for LEOs in my community lately. We've lost 2 LEOs in the line of duty in the past 2 years, with more injured. One was lost after being struck by a vehicle working a traffic detail, the other was assassinated during a traffic stop (another officer was also severely wounded in this same event).

Any loss is unfortunate. My prayers are up for his family.

I don't think there is a "war on cops" so much as it can be a dangerous job.

I don't think that there is a concerted "war on cops". However, in the past six months I've attended the funerals of two peace officers that I personally knew who were murdered because of their job, one of which was assassinated at his home. Another officer that I personally know has a long road ahead of him after being shot twice (once in the face).

Statistically, there are jobs that are more dangerous, but those folks aren't typically targeted for violence because of their employment status.

I fear we have worse yet to come in the form of violent encounters. Budgets cuts are leasing to the closer or cut backs of mental health facilities and prisons turning out inmates. An increase of such people in the population will lead to more violent encounters.

As to my brethren in Arkansas,

TRUMANN, Ark. — An Arkansas couple says a police officer killed during a late night traffic stop dragged a wounded comrade to safety despite having been shot in the neck himself.
Godspeed, sir, we have the watch.

    This is really interesting data.

Here's the summary for 2009 from the FBI.

    Officer deaths per year: http://www.nleomf.org/facts/officer-...data/year.html

My thoughts & prayers are extended to the officer's family.
