    It may have been the first service pistol cartridge created after the current FBI ammunition testing standard was devised.

    .40 S&W terminal ballistics are generally very good since it's a relatively powerful cartridge and most likely uses projectiles developed around the "FBI Protocol".

    I thought that’s the reason the Brazilian police went with 40?

    At least at the federal level, Brazilian cops are carrying 9mm, in a mix of legacy PT92s, Glock 17/19s, and the Taurus TS9. IDK what municipal PDs are carrying down there

    The .38 Taurus Pistol Caliber was created to comply with Brazil's new prohibition on handgun cartridges capable of generating more than 300 ft/lbs of muzzle energy with standard loadings

    Doesn't answer the question about civilian ownership but some Australian PDs carried .40 S&W. Don't know if they still do.

    Other than Brazil and Australia, were there other LE in other countries that used it?
