I’d clean them up first. You’d be amazed at how they may shoot. As OCD enthusiasts, we sometimes get wrapped up in things that don’t need wrapping up. I’ve had a few mil surp bolt guns and a 1903 25-20 Marlin that looked nasty. A good scrubbing and they shoot pretty good when it was all said and done. Just go easy, use the gentle stuff first (like low odor mineral spirits) and do lots of soaking. For the wood, I’d start with a gentle wash of Murphy’s Oil Soap. Then a few wipe downs with the mineral spirits. There’s a product called Howard Feed&Wax that can be used after that to help gently bring the wood back into shape. Some of the Formby stuff is good too, but have to gently experiment. Wood is unique with type and age. It all reacts differently.

With the caveat that I've never done this myself...you might find some of Mark Novak's videos useful if you've never seen them before.

I think those will clean up well for you. One trick I was shown a long time ago was to get the red rubber gum erasers and use them on the stubborn spots.

I thought I had a partial box of .300 Savage ammo/ brass from when I had my M99. It wasn't where I though t it was. If I find it, its yours.

All those old skool Savage calibers are really neat stuff. From a different era for certain. Especially if you hunt, saying casually “Oh…I used a 250-3000 Savage” gives you not only immediate cred, but the almost certain satisfaction of knowing whoever is hearing it probably has no idea what you’re talking about.

I'm sensing I will be learning how to re cut a barrel crown too.
Id clean it up and shoot it first. Ive had several rifles with pitted bores and mildly to moderately damaged crowns that shot from OK to pretty good. The 1927 badly abused 94 I did get it cut off 1/8" and recrowned, it went from about a 4" gun to about a 2 1/2" gun.

Roger that. I brushed the chambers of both with some copper brushes and hoppes no9 and they look dang near spotless, so I probably ought to just buy some ammo before trying to get crazy with a cutter.

Okie John mentioned ammoseek in a different thread and I think I'll get plenty of use from those guys.

Plus, gotta get make some factory brass somehow!

Got a date with a bunch of steel wool and some kroil later this week I think

Negatory Ghost Rider, bronze wool is the better option.
    Bad ideas, brilliant execution

I don’t know who’s to blame for that but I know who didn’t do it!
