    Frangible 9mm

Hey folks, as I’ve been chronicling in my reloading journal, I’m new to this part of the hobby and I’ve been scouring the internet looking for deals. I came across a website that is selling frangible bullets for dirt cheap and it makes me curious.

I talked to my reloading buddies who tell me that lightweight frangible ammo is tough on barrels, especially with fast burning powder and the recoil will be pretty snappy because of the physics of it all. A quick internet and p-f search yielded similar results, with some saying the barrel wear isn’t from the projectile but the lead-free primer that is typically loaded into the cartridge.

So I bought some and loaded 50 rounds up see what’s up. Specs are as follows:

94 grain Norma Frange, 1.145 OAL, .3750 Crimp, 4.0 Titegroup in mixed brass.

The price is compelling. You could get 1k for $50 with free shipping. I’m always looking for deals as a high-volume shooter (now reloaded too) and while it may not have the soft recoil as my gamer loads, quantity is a quality of its own.

Anybody have experience with this stuff?

If you're not going to learn to use the front sight properly, don't bother with it. If pointing the gun, screaming "Ahhhhh!" and cranking on the trigger is all you can learn to do, work on doing that safely. -ToddG

As someone who’s been a multiple time victim of the Good Idea Fairy’s cousin, the But It’s A Great Deal! Fairy, I’d ask what are you looking to gain by using them?

The POI is going to be different and the recoil impulse is going to be different so I’m not sure what training value there is other than just getting trigger presses in.

At least that’s what my brain is coming up with this morning and maybe I just need more coffee.
    Bad ideas, brilliant execution

I don’t know who’s to blame for that but I know who didn’t do it!

Seems like you will be the one to tell us how well they work.

Horror story: The area gunzine writer considerately furnished the remnants of his T&E frangibles to his wife. They were not very good and she seemed not to appreciate the favor. Those were the old sintered bullets, surely the polymer in yours must make them better.

50 rounds went down range just fine. They smell a little funny but no smoke or any other unusual phenomenon. The recoil is softer than I thought it would be. Not bad.

How many grain are they? I remeber burning through a batch of Norma 85gr hollow points and they just felt funky. The 320 didn't care much for them either. X-5 was fine with them though.
Providing 0 to content but posting anyways.

95 grain. They feel on par with light gamer loads, but would definitely feel light compared to regular off the shelf 9mm.

As someone who has seen quite a few frangible rounds, go through pistols in a training, academy environment, accelerated barrel wear is only one issue.

When we issued the P229 in 40 we had people breaking extractors shortly after graduating the academy where they were required to shoot about 3000 rounds of frangible ammunition.

Long story short, the frangible caused increased slide velocity, which caused premature war on the extractors. The solution was two replace the extractors on all the guns prior to them departing the Academy.

And my understanding of some of the intent (and I have used them) is for shooting steel at close ranges, so if you have that opportunity they might be handy. Just don't confuse them with normal, especially jacketed, ammo.
