Rethink the J frame life style - Ellifritz piece

Just to stir the pot on a Sunday. We have a lot of good folks who speak to a J frame, LCR carry option as reasonable. I certainly have them, trained and shot them. So after the latest terrorist go around, Greg Ellifritz posted this: https://www.activeresponsetraining.n...cks-in-the-usa

I’ve written numerous articles about how I feel comfortable carrying a small snub revolver in my low crime neighborhood. No more. You may not be dealing with the lone crackhead robber anymore. If you have to fight against multiple motivated terrorists armed with explosives and long guns, your .38 snub is the wrong tool for the job.

I would suggest that from this point forward, you shouldn’t leave the house without a medium to full-sized auto pistol and at least one spare magazine. Practice your long range pistol shooting as well.
The idea being that the NO attacks predicts a wave of new ones. Folks posting that there are 1000 operatives good to go! Note - I remember a State Department dude after 9/11 telling us that there were 8000 of them here!

I'm still going to EDC my G26 and a mag unless dress or locale moves me to a pocket gun - still working in the idea of a 380 vs. snubby.

A confession - for some insane reason - I have set up my everyday pants with a JM Glock OWB holster (no IWB for me) and a Galco mag pouch on the other side. But it's cold! So I get my Duluth lined pants out and set them up with the same (of course, I have more stuff in the box o' holsters and pouches). But then I take my G44 and it's mag out for the day! OMG - a 22 LR - why? Old age insanity? I made it to the upscale market and back safely. No bears wandered by. I suppose if my hands fail, that gun might be it. I have some hand doc looking at some nondominant weirdness this week. But they seem good, I did 60 or so 45 ACPs WWB with no problem a month ago.

I’ll leave this here, mostly because T’s post still cracks me up:

It has long been my personal policy to carry my J frame at home, or within walking distance of home...dog walks, mailbox walks, (~1/2 mile or so), anyplace within my rural subdivision.

Once I step foot in my vehicle, I am equipped with one of my Glocks, a spare mag, pepper spray and often a sap.

    Works for me.

To confess, I also have a Delica, small Surefire, an OC in a jacket packet, and a SWAT-T in a back pocket. I don't find them difficult or obtrusive to carry. In the SUV, I have some significant first aid, battery, chargers, bleed stuff plus Blizzard gear. However, if we are having a blizzard, I'm not going out. Folks have died on the roads here because of going for a wander in such. Took a Lone Star Medic course. Did some winter survival course back in our skiing days. But now, we are homebodies.

I do worry abut terrorists a bit. Our local JCC has had real threats according to the FBI and added off duty law. Whether I have something at the gym is .... I do fret that the off duty law don't have an extra mag. I fussed but no change on that one.

TOPS was just a few miles from me.

It humors me when some carry more as a concealed carrier than I carry on duty. I will not be changing my daily habits due to an article posted on the Internet. To each their own.

The thrashing between concealability and capacity is definitely a thing for me. Throw in some thrashing over caliber and it can be a real cluster. Fortunately all of my choices are single action so there isn't much difference in the trigger.

It's good to be able to have these "problems."

    Context matters.

My biggest threat at work is frankly a wild animal while entangled in honey suckle/rose bush/briar, or someone popping me with a deer rifle from a stand.

A hammerless wheelie probably works better in situation one with a high probability of a contact shot and fouled draw.

Not much I can do on the second option besides live a life that's worth living in the mean time.

So a "better" gun would have helped those who got run over? How about a spare mag? Would that have helped them avoid the truck?

Since we're playing dress up, how about playing the character who avoids stupid people, at stupid times, in stupid places.

Since I was in bed at 11:30, the gun I didn't have on me was irrelevant.

I think about a carry gun as follows -- what percent of my full size, optimized pistol performance can I shoot with the carry gun. If it is 80 to 95%, I don't give it a bit of thought. There are many small pistols that conceal well, and allow me to shoot that percentage of my big gun ability. If it is 10 or 20%, like I am realistically able to do with a J frame, then that is a no go for me. I do think a J frame is a great choice for when you are not carrying a gun or as an additional gun.
