Knowing Our History
I have a lot of old newspaper articles, files, and information. Most of it may hold a value only for curiosity if that, but I like reading old stuff. Having worked law enforcement in Southern California for a couple decades, I had the privelage of interacting with, and getting information from, a bunch of other agencies, and I had access to a lot of information going back decades. I think history is fun and it provides context to where law enforcement training is now, and maybe the direction it should go in the future... knowing history to avoid being doomed to repeat it and all...
There are threads that discuss old training and such, but nothing I'd consider appropriate to revisit or continue, so I'm going to create a new thread and if nothing else I have stuff to ramble on about.
My first addition to this thread will be a subject that was one of the most impactful parts of my career - Low Light Training. But this isn't about lumens and candela and what WML (Weapon Mounted Light) goes on your polymer framed high capacity striker-fired pistol or what UI (user interface) for your admin lights vs tactical lights... In fact, It's a bit over 44 years prior to when I started working for my department's Weapons Training Unit and about 57 (almost 58) years ago.
It's an article from the Long Beach Independent Press Telegram from February 19, 1967 about the Long Beach (CA) Police Department’s “new” low light training, and while it's short... It's still kinda cool. There’s a lot more to come…
