    9mm 85 grain?

The other day I was ordering more 9mm range ammo and say some Norma hallowpoint for sale so I bought it (shipping was free). Anyways it got here and I didn't notice it's 85 grain. Never seen that load before. Stupid question, but is is safe to shoot? I think at that grain weight it's range food now, but will the gun even function correctly? Name: 20241012_223118.jpg

Only way to really answer the function question is to shoot it! Given the velocity, it’s probably on the mid to lower end of pressure too, so it’s not “dangerous” or plus P.

You’ll find most here are very particular about what defensive ammo they bother to purchase and use, sticking mostly to very reputable ammo used as LE duty ammo like Gold Dot, HST, Ranger, etc, with a side of heavy hard cast for 4 legged predators.

All the gimmick and snake oil stuff (lightweight high velocity, frangible, fragmenting, etc etc etc) will very often under penetrate. Something we should all have learned in 1986 and before.

That stuff sells based on the shooting public’s ignorance regarding gel testing, where temporary stretch cavity looks impressive and “muh energy” and “I’m only 10” wide, why do I need over 12” of pen in gel?”

Tha is for the reply. That's why I was designation it range ammo now. I was just concerned that with such low pressure it might malfunction or stovepipe the gun. Or even worse squib.

Monolithic bullets are always light for their dimensions. This is probably the same profile as their cup and core 9mm 115 gr bullet. Barnes, for example is the same way.

Good thing I shot it. Stove pipe city in my 320 carry, about every third round. The x5 didn't mind it, didn't always return fully to battery, not sure if that is just because its not broken in yet or the ammo. The p365 love them. Its accurate, just not enough pressure behind the round to eject consistently. the empty shells roll down my arm on the 320, and barely cleared my arm on the x5. Only 200 rounds to go through.

Heavier bullet of similar design, slightly higher recoil impulse, you might wish to consider these if you like the NORMA MHPs:

I don't particularly like Norma ammo. I was ordering a case of range ammo and saw cheap hollow points with a good name and free shipping so I bought them without looking at the grain weight. It was a mistake.
