What is more likely is that I will buy the rifle to host the Steiner, then decide to buy a different scope for it; then stick it in the safe and not use it.

And it is a skill that some people simply can't acquire. I have not (yet) run across anyone who can't at least manage to operate a lever gun at a sufficient level to use it, but I have seen people who can't manipulate a bolt action without serious angst.

The latter people are the ones with legit issues and are not to be confused with people who WON'T manipulate a bolt action. In one case I know, the shooter was born with a condition affecting timing/rhythm of sequential movements and some fine motor skill issues that just happened to make cycling a bolt - and, to a much lesser extent, a pump - very frustrating, while the lever gun was the least problematic of the manual repeaters.

There was nothing like being considered "the gun guy" at a workplace WRT running across individuals who made equipment choice interesting.

I was wondering if it was that, or if he had done something in 303.

    Thanks.

Is there an optimum weight and barrel length range for this particular application?

The vignette I seem to keep in my head is a meeting engagement with something thin-skinned and dangerous, with a snapshot and follow-up at mostly indoor sorts of distances while retaining the ability to take positional shots in the 100yd - 300yd range. I've taken a bolt gun class, and I don't own any lever actions, so that certainly biases me. I like a lot of what I see in the Ruger 7.62x39 bolt action, or the various x39 mini-Mausers.

But I also feel spoiled for the kind of actions I see in the precision rifle world, and in that world .473 short action .308 AI/AW magazine rifle is as mature and sorted as ARs in 5.56mm.

I see Leupold offers a 1x-4x mil-reticle optic with a dialable turret, and that I find it a tempting option for this application. Would something like a compact 2.5x-10x with a turret and stacked dot be too much glass? Classic stocks are nice, but there are folding rifle chassis, and folding helps keep the rifle as convenient as possible. The chassis are also easier to put lights on, and lights are nice for the defensive use.

I get the sense that 12lbs for the rifle would be too much, but are we better in the 6lb-8lb range, or instead the 8lb-10lb range? A sub-7lb .308 can be a little bouncy at that weight and so I can see the value of x39 based cartridges as the weight goes down, and the 6mm bullets are in a new world of performance. 7.62x39 ammo and AK mags have similar logistical benefits as .308 AI/AW.

Similar question about barrel length, I can see justifying barrel lengths from 13.7" - 18" (20" seems like just a little much, but I'm happy to be wrong).

So on the lighter end, a pin & weld 6mmARC and a 18" 308 on the heavier, and everything in between.

Let's pretend for this conversation that semi-auto rifles and shotguns have all disappeared. Let's also pretend that pump action shotguns have as well (because if semi autos aren't in consideration, a pump shotgun probably rules the roost for any purpose out to 100 yards with buck or slugs). Essentially I'm trying to narrow it down to choices limited to non-semi-auto rifles for the role of a defensive rifle/carbine. Ideally it would be very reliable, not fragile, able to hold up to a relatively brisk shooting schedule such as a weekend carbine course, and reasonably accurate for defensive purposes.
I'm not 100% clear on what "defensive/general purpose" means in this context. If we're talking home defense than I think a bolt gun is a spectacularly poor choice, especially in the calibers you mention. I'd probably go with a Rossi R92 in .44 Mag, .45 Colt or .357 Mag, in that order, at least for anyone living in a place like I do. Not a great hunting gun for general use but capable of killing most four-legged animals inside of 100 yards with the right ammo. For defensive use inside of a structure I'd rather have a lever gun than a bolt gun although the latter is by no means useless.

If by general purpose you mean the things sporting arms are typically used for I'd say a bolt gun in 7.62 NATO would be pretty useful across a broad range of applications.

By the time I decided I needed one, they had disappeared. I think I’ve seen one in a used rack since and it was priced much higher than I was willing to pay
