This class was an excellent introduction to Snubby operation. Wayne draws on firearm knowledge and experience that is both deep and wide, relating it to skills that build towards some very demanding evaluations.
Class Notes
Class started with introductions and extended Safety brief.
Remember Timmy and Tammy. Ideal backstop is the guy who needs to be shot, honestly. No leaks!
Skills transfers from revolver to semi auto
Pluses and minuses of a compact 5 or 6 shot revolver.
Shooting Notes
AM
Need X or 10 on B8 otherwise it’s a miss. Only hits count. Basic fundamentals: grip, sights, shoot, get ready to do it again.
Drill: Load one at 12 o’clock. Stroke. Stroke. Stroke. Stroke. Bang! Singles. Spin cylinder. Repeat. Till 5 clicks. Reload. From 3 yds. Same drill. From 5 yards.
F2S drills. Working From holster. Box drills.
PM
Justin Dyal drills. 5 yard round up. 10 Round Snubby Quiz.
Shot LAPD Qualification Course of fire.
Equipment Notes
Used my Ruger LCR, .38 special, which was at 885 rounds. Stock sights. No malfunctions.
Shot 192 rounds of Federal 148 WC GMM and 10 rounds of S&B 148 WC. I wore a polo and shorts. Day started around 65F but ended at 92.
Key Takeaways
1. I am shooting high with the GMM and stock sights. Need to put my taller white XS sight back on to lower hits to center punch target. Investigate an XS green option, since my preferred dot color now seems to be green, post cataract surgery.
2. Reloading loose Wadcutters rounds from strong side pocket is…hard. Investigate Speedloaders and / or a FMJ/HP reload.
3. Holster was my DSG Hitchhiker, Appendix. Had issues reliably holstering. Might be set too deep? Investigate changing cant and/or height.
4. Ya gotta stroke the trigger. Like a canoe paddle. Stroke, stroke, stroke. No slapping, no staging.
5. I tried my S&B WCs I’d brought, but noticed immediately my groups opened up, so I reverted to GMM. I need to do a deep dive into POI vs POA for my WC ammo stocks once I get my sights sorted out.
I’ve never taken any revolver-specific training. This class elevated my Snubby knowledge base substantially. It also surfaced a couple equipment issues (holster, sights) I need to resolve. Despite the drills being pretty hard, it gave me a lot more confidence in my gun, provided I do my part.
Special thanks to SeriousStudent, who made sure the class ran smoothly and we were all fed and watered.
