Has anyone gotten to major power factor out of a G17L (6” barrel) with factory 9mm ammo?
A 115 grain bullet would have to go ~1435fps, a 124 would have to make ~1335fps, and a 147 would have to hit ~1125.

I thought I had chrono data from my 17L, but no entry. Drat. I do however have data from an AR pistol with a 7" barrel.
Win Ranger 127gr +P+ averaged 1306.80FPS over 10 shots. High was 1333; Low was 1298. I doubt this load will make major from a 6" barrel.
I did blow some of my stash shooting GSSF indoor matches with my 17L. It was the older suspect QC stuff. I don't know if that stuff would expand, but it was quite accurate from that Glock.
You might get there with someones +P+ "boutique" loading... but I don't think anything from the major manufactures will quite make it there.
I just bought and shot some of @Lost River's 148gr +P Penetrator. He says it did 1156 out of a G34. It's good stuff, like all his ammo, but the match prizes will have to be good to offset the ammo cost.

Why?
Major power factor is not rewarded in GSSF.
Only for .45 CDP in IDPA.
Major 9mm only in USPSA Open.

Yep.
I’m not looking to build an even remotely competitive open gun (I shoot Limited Minor as it is), but I think it would be fun to shoot some local matches with the benefit of 170mm mags with just a factory ammo swap. No one shoots Limited anymore, so the overall ranking is what matters anyway.
It is unlikely that any factory ammunition will produce 'Major' performance even from the 6'' barrel of the Glock 17L, however if you are already set up to reload, a 147-grain bullet over either VihtaVouri 3N37 or N105 seems to be a reasonable starting point since maximum charges of those propellants produce velocities nearest the Major rating. Careful load development should get you to a 147 Major load without generating pressures in the nose-bleed range. I've done as much with N105 from a stock Glock 17. From my gun, they're clearly potent, but signs of excessive pressure are non-existent.

9mm conversion barrel in a Gen 5 .40 Glock to shoot 9mm Major hand loads??
Reloading is not in the cards.
