Lee is releasing a Micrometer for their seating dies

It's supposed to be available in two weeks.

I already have a micrometer seating die, but would have tried this, if it had been available a few months ago.

I figure some folks here might find that interesting.

That is excellent news. We use Hornady dies with their micro adjust seating die on the Dillon, but I have a number of set of Lee dies that I use with a little turret press for low volume / fiddley stuff. Gotta get a couple of these.

For the reloading neophyte, what are the advantages of a micrometer seating die?
    Bad ideas, brilliant execution

I may be slow, but I get there.

It lets you make a known adjustment to OAL.
It lets you record the setting for a particular bullet + OAL and return to it without a lot of fiddling.

I have a couple of Hornady Micro-just spindles, less expensive than Redding. Unfortunately the graduations are so fine it is hard to tell what I am doing. The Lee looks more legible.

Instead of guessing and turning the seating stem in or out in the hope of landing at the desired length, the micrometer should yield a more precise and repeatable seating process.

Back in stock at Midsouth. I just ordered 2 of the handgun version to try out.

What’s best practice for using these? Do I need to plug the bullet length and OAL into a formula to get a setting starting point?

I assume the initial setup will be trial and error. Start long and slowly increase seating depth until the desired OAL is reached.

Ideally the stem adjuster will be accurate and capable of repeat settings so you'll be able to return to whatever number you're using for 55, 62, 75 grain 223 or what have you.

I should know this but wanted to ask a quick question of the smart people who probably know this off the top of their head.

Will this work with other manufactures seating dies? I have some RCBS, some Dillon, some Lee and (Lord help me) some Pacific/Hornady dies.

At a quick glance it looks like the Dillon's are a no go (separate seat and crimp).
