I went out yesterday and got some shooting in. Brought the 2 Model 10s along.

I shot a good bit of a new load I have been working with, which is a 158 grain poly coated SWC. It is an updated version of the load that Phil Hemphill used to win 10 national championships, as well as countless other matches with . It is essentially the same load but using a poly projectile. Needless to say if you ever had the chance to see how well Mr. Hemphill could shoot the load at 50 yards using one of his S&Ws, you know it works. The man could shoot.

Anyways I ran some through the old school M10s. Even with my eyes having a tough time seeing the sights, the guns obviously like the load. This is 15 yards shooting double action offhand:

After that I went to work on some shotgun hulls that were on the ground. I had brought along an old Ithica Deerslayer that I just got back from Jim Brockman. He had put a new front sight on it, as well as a base for an optic if I chose to go that route. Right now it is set up with a peep sight and a tall steel blade front sight. Jim called it my "camp gun" as I told him I wanted it loaded with slugs and close at hand when I was in grizzly country. Anyways, I had shot some rounds through it, and now used the empties as targets for the Model 10s and the 158 SWCs. There is no question that they are an accurate revolver as you can send the empty shell flying pretty easily.

If you build one, you have to share photos. I think Numrich Arms still has skinny barrels from Model 12s.

As to LE guys not being gun guys, I was stopped for exceeding the speed limit in the 80s on my motorcycle, I had to explain how to check and unload my Colt SAA to the nice AZ DPS officers. They did think it was pretty cool (4 3/4" nickel 44 spl), just didnt know how they worked.

That was my experience as well. That said, having to explain to a Trooper how to clear a Single Action Army would have to rank pretty high in the coolness factor...
Tell me you still have that Nickled SAA in 44 Special...

I regret to inform you that I do not. I foolishly traded it away in my youth, mid 20s in this case. Last I saw it a real deal black cowboy bought it from the gun shop in Flagstaff I consigned it at and he looked very pleased to have it. It may well have lived a life of high adventure.

I had that particular pistol with me visiting friends up near lees Ferry, I took a girl with me, Becky, she was of a somewhat free and adventursome spirit. I had shot the Colt a bit, and decided to swap to my 4" 29 for the ride back to Flagstaff. I handed her the Colt rig to put in the saddle bag, next i knew she was wearing it, and I must say it looked absolutely outstanding on her. I also regret letting her get away.

Regrets are best shared around a campfire while imbibing a shot of good scotch, such as my beloved Macallans. First round is on me...

Pitch black next to a lake, listening to the ripples lap at the shore during silences which may well be long, drinking whatever came to hand.

Great shooting Lost River! And I like that load you are working on. SWC loaded .38s are among my favorite. I hope it gets offered for sale.
