Please read the rules before participating in this thread.

    Week 55: 10-8 Pistol Test
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 03-December-2012.

    by Hilton Yam
    Range: 7yd
Target: IDPA target (ie. 6" square head box and 8" circular body--any hits outside these areas are a miss!)
Start position: concealed holster with hands at sides or retention duty holster from interview position or long gun ready
    Rounds fired: 65

A shot timer with PAR function is required for this drill. One can read about and download an original copy of this drill here: http://10-8performance.blogspot.com/...stol-test.html

Here is a video of Jason Falla running the test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JlP_...eature=related and another with "Surf" shooting it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05P9ARD4cj4.

Pick a par time (5, 6.5, or 8 sec) to use on all 12 strings of fire.

String 1: On the buzzer, draw from the holster and fire 4 rds to the body then 1 round to the head, strong hand only
String 2: On the buzzer, from a high two-hand ready, transfer the pistol to the support hand then fire 4 shots to the body and 1 shot to the head, WHO
String 3: On the buzzer from a high ready with an EMPTY chamber; rack slide to chamber a round using the strong hand only, then fire 4 head shots all SHO
String 4: On the buzzer from a high ready with an EMPTY chamber; rack slide to chamber a round using the weak hand only, then fire 4 body shots followed by 1 head shot all WHO
String 5: Start with the pistol aimed at the target, slide locked open, empty mag, SHO; on the buzzer reload SHO and fire 1 shot to the body
String 6: On the buzzer, from the holster, draw and fire 7 shots to the body and 1 to the head
String 7: Start with 7 rounds loaded in the pistol; on the buzzer draw from the holster and fire 7 shots to the body, reload from slide lock and shoot 1 to the head
String 8: On the buzzer draw from the holster and fire 8 shots to the head
String 9: Start with 3 rounds loaded in the pistol; on the buzzer from a high ready, fire 2 shots to the body and 1 shot to the head, reload from slide lock and repeat the 3 shots
String 10: Start with 2 rounds loaded in the pistol; on the buzzer draw from the holster and fire 1 shot to the body and 1 shot to the head, reload from slide lock and repeat the 2 shots
String 11: Start with 4 rounds loaded in the pistol; on the buzzer from a high ready, fire 4 shots to the body, reload from slide lock and then fire 4 shots to the head
String 12: Start with 1 round loaded in the pistol and 2 additional mags with 1 rd each; on the buzzer draw from the holster and fire 1 shot to the body, reload from slide lock and repeat twice

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:
    • Start position (concealed or duty retention holster)
    • PAR time selected
    • Total number of hits within the PAR time

According to Hilton, once you can break 58-60 points on a given par time, you are ready to move to the next par time. You are doing quite well if you can break 60 points on the 5 second par, shooting per the protocol.

(if you cannot draw from a holster, your range sucks, as you CANNOT effectively train there; find a new range or club that allows realistic practice--hint, look to where your local USPSA and IDPA shooters train, as they must draw and move...)

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

G19 w/RMR06 in ATOM mount carried OWB in a Fricke Gideon Elite concealed under a Northface vest firing Fed AE9FP 147 gr FMJ.

This is only the second time I have shot strong handed since getting out of my cast; it is also the first time I have attempted the 10-8 drill, so I chose a 6.5 sec PAR.

64 hits: (4.19/5.58/5.39/4.17/5.33/4.14/6.04(-1 just high and right at 2 o'clock)/6.50/5.78/5.78/5.88/6.30)

According to Hilton's guidelines, next time I shoot the 10-8 drill I need to be running the 5 sec PAR...

This is a good drill that I will be adding to my practice regimen!

Gen 3 G-17 in a Comp-Tac OWB holster, concealed beneath an open front fleece vest.

    PAR Time: 8.0 seconds.

62 hits and 1 shot over PAR for a score of 61?

    Times: 3.84, 5.15, 6.97, 6.82, 7.37, 5.93, 6.71, 5.47, 6.05, 6.11, 8.32, 7.50.

This is the first time I have shot this drill. Strings 3, 4 & 5 were pretty new to me.

I guess I should move to a PAR of 6.5.

I noticed in the videos that they were shooting string one SHO. This is an interesting drill in that with the different manipulations, the time is so close on each string.

    String 1 is SHO.

Any shots over PAR are the same as a miss.

How do you manipulate the slide support hand only -- slide stop, rack the rear sight on your belt, or otherwise?

    Gen4 G17 from Keeper under t-shirt

    Par time: 6.5
    Hits: 51

Managed to catch my shirt in the slide on string 4, resulting in a late shot and a hole in the shirt. On the other strings I tended to shoot too quickly; need to slow down and get my hits.

    GJM--Any way you can...

I use my rear sight (a nice big RMR) on my pocket or belt.

Watch the two videos and see how those guys do it.

    Gen3 G34, Ameriglo Defoor sights, 115gr PMC, concealed in a Keeper under a t-shirt.

    5 second PAR

    65 hits/100%

Groups weren’t the prettiest, but I tried to use the time available and they were all in.

    Times were: 3.44, 4.05, 4.32, 4.79, 4.82, 3.60, 4.68, 4.15, 4.15, 3.88, 4.81, 4.62

This was a good drill day – finally shot a Triple Nickel under four seconds (3.87), plus a low light Triple Nickel in 4.96. I ended the day happy!

Our training group is doing low light stuff right now so we used the Triple Nickel as a vehicle to observe: the difference between the TN in full light vs. low light (only enough to see the targets without aid of a flashlight, but still pretty dark) and the difference in recoil and muzzle flash characteristics of training ammo vs. defensive ammo in low light.

    Drift, sorry, I caused it.
