I hear that Iceland is nice in June.

As I read that I thought who would want to vacation there. But then foreign countries are like that. As far as crime in Quito, it's at least as safe as Memphis TN.

The last trip we took to MX involved armed security on an excursion to the Copper Canyon. That wasn't very comforting for me but most on the tour never noticed the security detail with M4's. The tourist industry is highly prized in most countries and the gov't makes sure it thrives. On a cruise in MX I noticed some boat patrols around the ship in the harbor.

But, did you know that Iceland's 2nd national holiday is "beer day?"

No shit, March 1 every year. It has to do with iceland's relationship with the same 1918 era prohibition that we dealt with, only more of it. Huge festival each year, based on P-F's favorite lubricant...

That’s a really low bar to clear. I spent large amounts of time over several decades in the Chicago tourist hotspots of Austin, Lawndale and Englewood and never felt as unsafe in any of those as I did in Memphis.

I seem to recall that Quito is where “professional” you-tuber photographers get ALL of their gear stolen.

I know. I was using Memphis as an example of not-so-safe.

Things heating up in Quito today with MX embassy extraction.

Something to keep on the radar as you track the situation in Ecuador in advance of your trip. This is a pretty dramatic sign of how bad things are (in general) in Ecuador for their government to think this was an acceptable course of action. This will likely draw condemnation from the international community, and if the U.S. puts up a meaningful stink over it then I would expect retaliation in some form (even if just indifference) against US citizens present in Ecuador.

But, props for the Ecuadorian prison being referred to as a "Deprivation of Liberation Center". That's like Nacho Libre had a baby with Nineteen Eighty-Four.

    As allud to up thread,

“Well known” doesn’t necessarily mean they are someone you should listen to.

Well, I’ll be listening to him next month, I’m taking a snubby class from him.
