    Much More Shooting

The vast majority of you 1911 .45 guys are regularly shooting great volumes of ammo, competition I presume, so you're forced to replace mags and mag springs regularly to keep your guns running correctly. I doubt I'll shoot my gun very often unless it really sinks its teeth into me. .45 ammo is quite expensive for my budget. I just ordered 500 rounds for near 250 bucks.

Thank you all for your magazine input! I know magazines aren't the place to try to save money!

Here's a great read on some of the more important 1911 magazine concerns like feed lip shape and presentation angle, follower design, whether they're controlled round feed or not, etc:

In addition to CMC and Wilson mags, Tripp Research Cobra mags are another solid contender.

My experience matches those of most of the prior posts: reliable flush fit 1911 magazines are 7-rounds only. 8-round magazines have extended bodies or bases to accommodate the spring and extra round.

Flush fit 8 round mags, including the Colts suck. As soon as the springs give out mine get Tripp Super 7 kits, and 10 rounders get the Tripp Super 9 kits.

Even with “good” (I.e. extended) 8 round magazines if any issues arise the first remediation is to go back to 7 round magazines. And no an 8 round mag with 7 rounds in it is not the same thing.

If you are wanting efficiency on the range why not 10 round magazines? 5x 10 round mags = 1 box of ammo.

Have you had good luck with any of the available 10-rounders?

I like 47Ds as well. All mag springs have a finite life. All mag tubes have a finite life. If you haven't replaced either, you're not shooting enough. Buy whatever you like and buy parts to rebuild them.

Thank you guys for steering me clear of the 8 round mags before I wasted any money on them!
Wilson and McCormick (CMC) have a large variety of mag options and they aren't all equal.

By the way, it isn't that 8 round mags necessarily are bad, it's just that flush fit 8 round mags are not that good.

None of Wilson or CMC's top mags will be flush fit mags, even their 7 round options, and there is not a top option for full size 7 rounders in the CMC line-up. Whether you like it or not, CMC made their reputation with the Devel/Shooting Star follower and they don't offer a full size 7 rounder with that follower.

Wilson's top full size 7 rounder would be the 47 or some variety https://wilsoncombat.com/magazine-19...-base-pad.html

If you want an 8 rounder from Wilson, get one of the ETM/500 Series https://wilsoncombat.com/magazine-19...-base-pad.html

The top mag in the CMC line-up is the Railed Power Mag (RPM) https://wilsoncombat.com/magazine-19...stainless.html

Another CMC option would be the PowerMag https://wilsoncombat.com/magazine-19...stainless.html

The PowerMag has a shorter tube than the RPM, but the Devel follower is the most size efficient follower for using in short tube mags.

    There's a reason I have 30 CMC 8 round Power Mags, and only 6 Wilson 47D's...

An FYI from Wilson's FAQ page https://wilsoncombat.com/wc-handgun-faq

Even though we use the strongest magazine springs in the industry, some pistols have such excessive tolerances in the magazine well–slidestop internal lobe area that some magazines will not reliably lock back on empty even when new. This is a known problem with some Springfield Armory pistols. You may need to have a gunsmith replace, polish or fit your slide stop for proper function. This may also be an indication that your springs need replacing.

In the Wilson and CMC product line-ups, the 920 Series and Range Pro Series mags may be perfectly fine, but they are not the mags Wilson and CMC made their reputations on.

I often refer to them as the "Cadillac Cimarron's" in their line-up. They are price point options. The Cadillac Cimarron wasn't necessarily a bad car, it just wasn't really a Cadillac.

Tripp Research has a very nice flush fit 7 rounder if you're looking for flush fit option
