Thread: What is your Old School Carry?

  1. #61
S&W Model 25-2 in .45 ACP with barrel shortened to 4".

    Or a S&W M27/M28

For semi auto, customized Colt 1911 in .45 ACP tuned for reliability. If we're talking "old school" I take that to mean the ammunition technology available is also "old school", which means I'd pass on 9mm. For revolvers it'd be .357 Mag or .45 ACP w/ moon clips, for autos it'd be .45 ACP. In my mind 9mm only became viable with the current newest generation of expanding ammunition technology.

Interesting exercise and similar to one I posted about back near Christmas.

    What are your choices?

Those are solid choices. I see in the photo of your Colt official Police that you are using 3.5 grains of Bullseye with a 158 grain bullet. I believe I got the same load from some of your earlier writings and use it with a 148 grain double ended wadcutter. It is a great general purpose load for 38 Special revolvers.

Thanks for the response and great photos.

The Saeco #348 is a 148-grain double-end, bevel-based wadcutter which is speed loader friendly when crimped in the crimp groove with beveled band forward, outside the case at 1.24" OAL. With 3.5 grains of Bullseye velocity is 800 fps in my Colt Agent -a true 2-inch gun with 0.005" cylinder gap - NOT a typical S&W J-frame 1-7/8" with 0.008+ gap. In my 4-inch Colt OP also with 0.005" gap the same load gives 855 fps and penetrates 24 inches In calibrated gelatin. In 6" Colt OP with 0.005" gap 911 fps, which approximates 147+P+ from a 3" gun, but at standard pressure. And 1000 fps from BSA-Martini with 25-inch barrel, grouping <2" at 50 yards.

I have an 8-cavity MP mold that rains SAECO 348 clones. Just wish it would drop them a bit smaller (.360).

Sized to .358, it groups 12 rounds in roughly 1 3/4” at 25 yards from my Security Six. It would probably do even better from a Ransom rest.

I’ve tested it and an HG #244 (full meplat wadcutter) in .357 cases using Universal, 2400, and even 4227 with very promising results.

Mine drops .360 as well. I load as cast and unsized tumble-lubing with 45-45-10 from.LSstuff. Fired brass is not resized, but decapped, primed and lightly flared only. The .360 bullet is inserted to depth in charged case then crimped and profiled in Redding Profile Crimp die. Brass lasts forever.

Thanks for the data on that load. The more I load/shoot that combination, the better I like it. I'll have to look into the Saeco mold. I didn't realize it was speed loader friendly.
