That would be about perfect for close or long range with not-so-great vision.
I am another Dawson advocate, but I finally caved and went with FO in the rear also.
You can experiment with colors, what I did was red in the rear and green on the front, the green is more vivid. IMO this works well.
And they make a bunch of variations, so you can have as much or little air gap as you might want.

so I have to ask.... what are you shooting with the 1911.

    plinking
tryin to make small holes on a B8 target
slammin the trigger hard up close

This has been the balance for me many years.

As LEO, I want to wear "see far" glasses but they suck for front sight clarity.

If I take off the "see fars", front sight is clear, target is blurry.

If I am shooting for points on a B27 target from 5 - 25 yards, I use glasses regulated to front sight distance. My front sight is clear and I aim for a hopeful ragged hole at the 25 yard line, that I try to make a 5, 7 and 15 yards.

Now red dot, I use my "see fars" or my dot turns into a super nova.

if I lose my glasses in a gun fight with a RDS pistol, I will place the super nova on the biggest part of the target.

    I hope this helps.

This is my somewhat old fart set up for duty. The dot is turned down as the camera will make it Jupiter.

Many yearssss ago, I had these sights on a SW4013TSW. They were fast up close but the group severly opened up at further distances.

I used to glob orange model paint on the front sight with a base of white. I prefer plain black rear.

here is my G48 and I turned the plastic rear around. its my cheap dont want to spend any money on.

I too suffer the old eye affliction. I have transitioned over to an RDS on most of my pistols (I wish I could say it was a magic carpet ride going from irons to dots) but before I did but I had been using XS F8 sights with some success. They're like Big Dots but the front blade is flat with a big orange tritium dot and the rear is plain black (w/ tritium inserts) with a bigger notch. It has its trade offs but I didn't feel like I suffered as much out to 25 yards as I did with the standard big dot sights (which I tended to vertically string some). Just a thought.

I'm primarily shooting USPSA or IDPA matches with the gun. Once in awhile, it's a carry gun. My goal is to make reasonable numbers of As or Zero downs at old fart speed. Not a millisecond worry wart. BTW, using a new JM Road Dog OWB on a concealed carry belt (not the Velcro game type that goes over your regular belt). Really like, holds the gun well for a nice draw. I like realistic gear.

Posting this from a mechanical point of view. Was looking for sights for my Glock 21. I ended up purchasing a set of Hackathorn sights from Ameriglo. The front sight is .140 with a tritium insert surrounded by an orange donut. The rear sight is black. The rear sight notch is .180. For my old eyes, these sights work great. I prefer sights with more daylight on either side of the front sight.

When my eyes were getting wonky about 3 years ago, I put a 10-8 rear on the RO elite 9mm I have, and it was OK with the front fiber.
Took the plunge and sent the slide out to CHPWS for the direct milling.
    Installed the Trijicon RMRcc.
    It's been great.

Fast forward, I traded into a DW Guardian.
Previous owner had Warren rear sight, with the shoulders and a tritium front.
This combination did not work for me.
Not wanting to mill it for another optic just yet, I've installed a 10-8 rear again, and I'm currently waiting on a lime green/tritium combo front.
This combination, with my updated glasses "should" work, and also allow me to target focus.

The red dot sight on the range officer is pretty slick tho.

A follow up - went for an annual checkup at my retina specialist ophthalmologist. I have mild macular degeneration and my retinal scans were fine with no significant problems. However, on the acuity testing, my dominant eye was down to 20/50! Using both eyes, I read just fine. But with the left eye (lefty dominant) not so hot. Thus, front sights - blurry. I'm scheduled to my other ophthalmologist for a YAG (if warranted) to use the laser to help clear my vision.

Did about 30 dry fires with irons and RDS today - if I use my right, nondominant eye - sight is much clear but breaking my usual motor program would take time. Got a couple of matches before laser time. Probably do decently but awaiting clarity. My doc is a shooter so I can discuss it. Most of my med folks here seem gun friendly. My last GI diet appointment, we discussed snubbies at bit.

This combo is really visible as far as for my poor eyes, but nothing compared to the RMRcc on the Springfield.
