In .45s I've had great success with Checkmate 8 rounders, with extended base pad, and Chip McCormick 8 round Power Mags. I'd rather take a kick to the balls than waste time with another 47D.

In 9mms, everything tried has run fine thus far: Checkmate, Mecgar, Wilson and Metalform. I think I've settled on Wilson ETMs for carry (spendy) and primarily Metalform 10 rounders as the bulk of my training supply.

It's been difficult to locate checkmate mags, but the brownells .45 mags have worked fine for me.

Anyone know where checkmates can be found? I've come to like the hybrid feed lips more lately.

I do believe that DW used Check-Mate as the OEM supplier of the magazines that came with my 45 ACP Specialist. I’ll also concede that they’ve been 100% reliable in this pistol when it comes to feeding and locking back the slide…in the paltry 200 rounds that have been fired.

However, and this is a big however - Check-Mate has been of indeterminate quality, and far surpassed by Mec-Gar and a bit surpassed by Metalform, when it comes to the quality and reliability. Specifically, the Meg-Gar Sig P220 magazines are far better than the Check-Mate mags that came with one of my P220s. Check-Mate is much better than ProMag but noticeably less reliably than Mec-Gar which have been essentially flawless. I appreciate that Mec-Gar uses a polymer follower, but their mags have been rock solid in every platform that I’ve used with them.

Edit to my post - that should be 226, not 220.

My Checkmate 8 rounders have given years of trouble free service. Checkmate Beretta 92 mags on the other hand always proved to be problematic and I ditched them.

In shades of Checkmate, the 9 round Mecgar mags that came with my 9mm Tisas Tank Commander are parkerized, to match the pistol. One had trouble advancing the follower due to grit in the mag when new. A quick disassembly and cleaning cured it, but phosphate on the inside of a magazine? Come on.

The big irony that Checkmate makes great 1911 mags and not great Beretta mags, while MecGar makes great beretta mags and not great 1911 mags

Perhaps a merging of the companies is needed. MecMate?
