The Pentagon says a US warship and multiple commercial ships have come under attack in the Red Sea | AP News

“We’re aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available,” the Pentagon said.

Not much information about this it.

Iranian backed Houthis have claimed responsibility. Time to treat them to some naval gunfire and cruise missiles for their efforts.

Should have already been done...but yeah.
There's nothing civil about this war.

I've tried several different times and still can't put into terms how demoralizing our international affairs over the past few years have been. This is a very efficient example of why.

ETA: our CENTCOM top four includes two commanders of 75th RR and a SEAL but even our verbal response was weak - "all appropriate responses."

It doesn't look like the USS Carney was attacked - just commercial ships linked to Israel that have been subject to a blockade over Israel's bombardment of Gaza.

Edit: the IDF released a statement saying the ships have no connection to the "state of Israel" but Unity Explorer is owned by Tel Aviv-based Ray Shipping Ltd., managed by London-based Dao Shipping Ltd, and flagged from the Bahamas. Likewise Number 9 is owned by Number 9 shipping ltd, manage by UK-based Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, and flagged from Panama.

Maybe, maybe not. Lots of ambiguity here. The ship shot down drones in their vicinity. Presumably it'd be more difficult to calculate trajectory for a drone than a missile but either way, omitting the assessed target does not mean that it wasn't the USN ship. Regardless, at some point between six-ish weeks of us blasting ordinance out of the sky, attacks on American forces in the region, and now multiple forms of kinetic engagement against international civilian cargo ships, you would hope that America would find its big dick energy again and start killing the motherfuckers that are spitting in our face on the world stage.

Shipping consortium’s and the flag the ship they fall under can be weird.

You cannot however ignore the ability. Of certain parties. To attack shipping lanes.

My understanding is both a ballistic missile and several cruise missiles were launched. Media calls them drones but they're cruise missiles. Apparently the first cruise missile targeted the destroyer or so it seems. Hard to know because they fly low to the surface and targets aren't readily apparent. Ballistic missile targets can be determined like artillery projectiles. Once the trajectory is established by radar the source of the firing position can be determined and counter battery fire is imminent.

The one thing to note here is that no Tomahawk missiles were launched by the US destroyer against the attack.

The Arleigh Burke class (DDG 51) destroyers replaced the Charles F. Adams class (DDG 2). The Arleigh Burke class was designed with an all-new hull form, incorporating much of the Spruance class (DD 963) destroyer propulsion and machinery plant, and the integrated Aegis Weapons System (AWS) proven on the Kidd class (DD 993) destroyers and installed on the larger Ticonderoga class cruisers. The AWS is composed of a multi-function phased array radar, advanced AAW and ASW systems, VLS, and the Tomahawk Weapon System. DDG 51 was commissioned on July 4, 1991, and the class is still in production. The class has been continuously upgraded with advanced sensors and weapons and improved support systems.
Might not be the case next time.

    Edit.

The radar sites in Yemen are known once a ballistic missile is launched. The US has hit those in the past.
