Other chrono units I've messed with over the years (PACT, Shooting Chrony, CED, Caldwell and probably a few more) have all been touchy and prone to error for one reason or another.

So then the big question would be do consistent results justify the 2x cost over more traditional stuff?

My Garmin unit has been super reliable as well, easily more than any other Chrono I've used. But, the main selling point for me is I can leave it in my range bag and have for every trip. Also, because it sits right on the bench, I don't have to wait for a cold range to set it up and take it back down again. The convenience factor is huge.

Another solid reason to buy this over other units.

I think this depends on what you want to do but compared to traditional light screen chronos it has a few advantages.

    1. Very minimal setup required - this is helpful if you want to build out a large sample size, collect datapoints at various temperatures, or you switch lots of ammo frequently, because it means you can get MVs every single range trip, with 5 minutes of work, and you're not limited to shooting a single target through a light screen chrono (sometimes wasted rounds). The Magnetospeeds are a little better but they influence POI so if you zeroed with one attached your POI will not be the same with it off.

    2. Extremely small and light by comparison, so easy to carry around with you all day

    3. Highly accurate - most light screen chronos aren't which doesn't really matter if you're just confirming power factor or getting in the ballpark, but will matter at distance

Compared against other radar chronographs it really depends on which ones you're comparing against. The older Labradars had terrible battery life, needed to be aimed precisely, were touchy about detecting shots so you'd frequently get no reading, are large, and sometimes you would get false readings if someone else was using one at the same time.

The newer competitors are too varied to really go into all the details because you have to compare unit by unit, but I will say the idea of calculating BCs / downrange velocities from a consumer level radar doesn't really work. The BC you get from something like the Applied Ballistics library is determined using a significantly more powerful radar. There's at least one youtube channel using a consumer chronograph to calculate BC, and every time I see him do it in his videos, the BCs he gets back are without a doubt wrong - he gets a better result from using the # off the box of ammo/bullets. The only case where I can see this being useful is if you're shooting cast lead or airgun or something where BC measurements aren't readily available and something is better than nothing.

This is how I ended up with a Garmin. I cringed at the price but it was well worth it. Mine hasn't missed a shot unlike the Crony. I always hated building loads for velocity testing and getting 3 ERRs in a row, accuracy testing with handguns was aways separate. When I tried to combine both, well you see what happened.

You need 2 of them. One at the muzzle and one downrange.

Cool to hear it's at least possible

Same poster said the variance from chrono to chrono kept that from being useful to somebody as precise as him.

Didn’t mention calibrating them together at the same range first.
