Certainly looked to me like he objected to the individual smashing up a car which prompted the confrontation. Don't object to other peoples behavior if you're not prepared to back it up with violence. If he wanted to be mellow he could have grabbed his girl and started running.

The equivalent of "please don't smash that car, dude." and lack of Shivworks diplomas does not justify one's demise. Offering your opinion to a random guy that you just witnessed get unhinged, rage and commit property damage. Strike 2.
Being unable, or unwilling to put up a defense after choosing to engage a raging random street guy for no benefit to yourself. Strike 3.

I agree with both sides. He didn't deserve the fate that awaited him, and the better part of valor is often to live to fight another day.

I'm not taking smug satisfaction that he was killed. Clearly, though, he injected himself into a problem that wasn't his to begin with. If I were to piss on his grave, it would be over the fact that his choice could have cost that woman her life as well.

I agree, In reading about him, I don't really see that - his main efforts were seemingly in recycling, solid waste management and safe injection sites. Don't see much nefarious in those things.
