    It's not really a backdoor, as best I can tell, it's just that the vulnerability in the algorithm was not widely disclosed. Backdoor implies that it was deliberately inserted in order to allow access for an external actor, this is just a case of conforming to laws governing export that deliberately call for weaker encryption to non-aligned states. Think of it as being similar to Motorola's ADP; good enough for the time, but with today's modern technology, relatively trivial to break. Given that it is an export specific issue, I don't think it would affect us or our allies very much, outside of providing additional easy SIGINT opportunities.
