I got my gun back. I noticed the cylinder is a little late locking up if slowly cocking it, and it had .010" end-shake. I put some shims in today, so the end-shake is gone. I will be taking it with me to Phoenix in a couple of weeks and will take it to Frank Glenn to cut the barrel to 5" and will ask him to correct the timing and gap.

The Smith charged me $100 to swap the parts over. I could ask him to set the barrel back but figured Frank would just do it while he has the barrel off.

I took some pictures with different grips. The finger groove grips were some which my Dad modified from an original set of Target stocks about 40 years ago. I also mounted a Millett rear sight.Name: IMG_0312.jpg

I saw another 28-2 at a local gun store yesterday, and the price was just "OK", but the gun itself was very nice, box and sales receipt included. I somehow willed myself to pass on it, and the next guy that came in grabbed it up. I have 2 4" 28-2's, one from 1955 and the other from 1977/78, my 6" is from 67 or so. All three were bought from the original owners, only the oldest one has the box.
The older one is at the top:

With Altamont grips. The 4" ones will get new bigger grips soon.

    Grail Gun

A 5-inch Model 27 has been at the top of my Grail Gun list for a while but I always missed out due to responsible decision making. This time I said the hell with that and went for it. This is a transitional model 27-3 (recessed but not pinned).

It's got both Performance Center and Classic Series markings, although I'm still trying to figure out what that means and when it dates to (seems like mid 80s). I'm not too worried about the provenance--I wanted a good looking shooter and I think I got one.

That is a beauty, and I would not worry about it shooting well either. It is a rather rare one, unless it has been abused in some manner, or is out of time, that does not shoot well. Chances are it will shoot nice small groups with a wide variety of loads.

In an online discussion with one older individual with was purchasing some .38 Short Colt, I found out he was shooting it through a Model 27. He said it was like shooting a rimfire in his gun and with age related hand issues, he really enjoyed shooting his old gun again. I knew a lot of folks shot them through J Frames and K Frames but that was the first I knew of through an N Frame and was an interesting observation on his part.

Your gun will no doubt provide many years of enjoyment and handle loads from heavy mags to lots of target type wadcutter ammunition.

    Congrats.

A work in progress, so to speak.

^^^^Are there any more where that came from? I've got a 4" M27-3 that would look great on!

It was sort of a fall through the cracks thing. It was only listed as s&w 3 1/2" 357, no model. I was the only bidder at a very reasonable price. I almost bid against myself just to be sure Id win it. Ive seen them on ebay go for a fair bit over $200.

As do I (but a 6"), but I don't know if there is a difference in threads between a -3 and a pinned barrel. I'd want to research that beforehand.
