Based on my hiking in scouts to include Philmont (10+ miles per day over 10 days with 35+ pound pack)-I think there are at least two components to your question

    1. The shorts- My immediate thought went to Prana as their long pants i.e. Zion stretch are a go to for many folks. I would be highly inclined to go full synthetic so they dry fast and well.

    2. The underwear- Ex Officio

Prana Zions are GTG. Not my favorite due to pocket config but a great short.

    Also, Beyond's Ventum: https://beyondclothing.com/products/...ht-cargo-short
    and Rig Light: https://beyondclothing.com/products/...short-original

are GTG. Added advantage of better venting. Lightweight, super stretchy.

Prana Brion are a slimmer cut without the useless cargo pocket, and no built in belt.

OR Ferrosi is my personal preference. Both the shorts and pants are great for hiking. I've worn the same pair of Ferrosi pants for the last ~150 miles of biathlons that I've run. Also used the shorts for long hikes and training runs.

When I was doing high mileage ruck training I would default to running/gym shorts.

Get some good boxer briefs. I prefer longer ones(9") to help with chafing. And of course any of the off the shelf anti chaf products.

I had some chaffing problems on 15 mile+ rucks until I started wearing leggings like these Men's Leggings & Tights | Under Armour under gym shorts. I have a full-size Kit bag set up with the recon harness. No issues carrying a 3L water reservoir, and the bag keeps all of my essentials up front.

Copy that. I may try gym shorts this weekend on a 20 mile practice hike.

If they don’t work, I’m thinking of trying these.

These might fit the bill on the comfort front (and pay homage to the MEN who rocked the short shorts).
Looks like UDT shorts, I've worn out a few pair. They work fine.

I would be going this direction since I already own five of them now.

Green or tan are great colors.

But for the love of God order them from Amazon, not direct. They're kinda flaky maybe. Ordered a Medium-Small directly once and they shipped XL, not once but twice. Third was the charm. The return process was not smooth. Definitely use Amazon.

Can’t do Ranger panties or kilts.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that……….

Good thing I’ve already got mine. My parents got it for me in my mid teens when Magnum was going strong.
