I attended the Jan 27-29 2023 Rangemaster Defensive Shotgun Instructor Class at Royal Range USA in Nashville. It was 3 days of learning the "Gospel of the Gauge" as Tom Givens calls it. There is a huge difference in the way a bird hunting shotgun or even a slug loaded deer shotgun are employed vs how a shotgun is used for defense. This class is all about teaching the defensive use of the shotgun.

As for equipment I used a Remington 870 that I had built by Scattergun Technologies back in 1996 when they were still owned by Roger Small and located in Nashville TN so it was a bit of a “homecoming “ for this particular shotgun. It is a 14” barrel “professional model” with stock shortened to 13” length of pull , sidesaddle to hold spare ammo on the gun, ghost ring sights and a Surefire forend. You don’t see the light installed in the videos because I removed it while shooting it so as to reduce the wear and tear on it. The light is plenty robust but even high quality lights take a pounding from 3 days of 12 gauge muzzle blast.

As to class performance EVERYONE passed which is no easy task between the shooting qualifications and the written test. Zach Cox took both the coin for the individual Rolling Thunder drill and the one for the Shotgun Casino Drill. He was using a Beretta 1301 with Holosun optic and sidesaddle. I was just under a second behind him on the Casino Drill running the 870.....hey I tried...😁 I did however manage to end up with the overall top aggregate score for the class . Top 3 in class were myself , Amy Moses and Greg Ellifritz . More pics and video can be seen at my FB page but here's a few of the pics.
