Do these AIM missiles detonate near its target like a grenade or does it hit the aircraft then detonate? That satellite is like 3 school buses long. It would be nice for the for the USN and the USCG to search for one big chunk vs 10,000 small chunks.

If just the solar panels broke off and the main payload stayed attached to the balloon, the balloon should have a pretty good streamer effect and limit velocity. Model rockets can sometimes survive even a tangled parachute deployment, as the chute adds enough drag to keep them from being damaged too badly. Hitting the water will do a lot less damage than hitting dirt and rocks. I've been thinking to myself that maybe that was the reason for waiting: To keep it as intact as possible for analysis.
