As requested, I patterned my 1301T with two different 00 buck I wanted to test. It was REALLY windy at the range so the testing was very limited.
I shot 15 year old Federal Tactical (pre Flight Control w/ 9 shots) and Hornady Black (8 shot) with their version of FC shot cups. I also had some Xtreme branded buck. I think it’s the house brand for LAX Ammo. I didn’t bother shooting it because of weather conditions and because I figured it be a waste of time because the ammo is loaded with only a wad and no shot cup…
Here are the results:
Fed Tac @ 10 yds
Hornady Black @10 yds
Fed Tac @ 20 yds
Hornady Black @ 20 yds
@Pnut which choke are you using or is a fixed choke. Sorry if I missed it in the thread.
It’s the fixed choke. My 1301 is a LE model so no interchangeable choke.
Did the BLACK beat ya up too much to be a viable option for you?
The Black is rated at 1600 fps. The old FedTac didn’t have rating on the box but I figured it was 1100 like the current FedTac with flight control wad.
Recoil with the Black wasn’t that bad. I definitely wouldn’t call it PUNISHING. It was only really noticeable when you shot the two loads back to back. More muzzle rise and a little more thump, but not painful. The only downside I could see is if you were running the Black and going speed shooting or double taps… it’ll definitely slow down your times.
Just a heads up for other SoCal member… LAX Ammo has BLACK and Critical Defense in stock. No Federal Flight Control though…
This is my patterning target from Greg Ellifritz’s shotgun class a couple years ago. I was shooting Hornady Critical Defense 00 from a 21” Remington 1187 Special Purpose with an improved cylinder choke tube. That gun wouldn’t run low recoil loads.
