Thread: Household flashlights recommendations

    Household flashlights recommendations

    My girlfriend would like to give her grandmother a couple of decent household flashlights. She lives in a rural area in Vermont and periodically loses power during inclement weather. The flashlights she owns now are weak halogen bulb things from the local hardware store. They have all the illumination of a large candle. I really like my Streamlight Microstream as an around the house task light but the button is very stiff so grandma would likely have difficulty pressing it. Grandma also wants something that takes normal people batteries that she can find at the grocery store like AAs.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Streamlight 1L-1AA. It's larger than the Microstream, but still fits in your hand well. Owning both, the button is easier (since it's bigger) on the 1L-1AA. Sure, I prefer the CR123 in it, but it also runs on 1 x AA, which are "normal grocery store batteries." There's also a Streamlight 2AA.

    How about the Streamlight 1L-1AA? The button is much easier. I have found that non flashlight people don't mess with modes and use whatever it comes on with. I would Tentap set it to High only and with a AA alkaline she has ~1.5hr runtime and 4.25hr with AA lithium.

    MACROStream, 2x bigger than the Microstream. Twice the output, same charging scheme as it's little brother.

    It doesn't have the everyday people batteries, but could be easily charged by the grandson-in-law.

    Along with a standard flashlight as recommended above, I would also do something lantern style, which will be better for indoor area lighting during power outages;

    I use the Streamlight Pocket Light https://clevelandkydex.com/index.php...hl5epf4a65bs33

    and my wife and daughters all have the Stylus Pro Penlight they carry in their purses https://www.streamlight.com/products/detail/stylus-pro

    all three work off of AAA batteries. I had intended to give one of those varieties to my 90 year old father in law, but found he couldn't work the tail button to activate the light. Something to consider when choosing a light for an older person who may not be accustomed to these types of lights and have reduced hand strength and dexterity.

    I also have one of these Streamlights with a tail button that is a little easier to work and is a larger light for home use and uses AA batteries

    In the Pelican line-up, I have the Recoil 2410 that has an easy to use lever switch and AA batteries. https://www.pelican.com/us/en/produc...ealthlite/2410

    For power outages when my girls were off at college, I bought them these 3315 lights that also use AA batteries https://www.pelican.com/us/en/product/flashlights/3315

    I don't have one yet, but have considered adding a lantern to my "lost power due to hurricane" collection of lights, and this may be a good option for your friend.

    What about a headlamp. I have found those invaluable for things like going to the bathroom in the dark.

    I carry a 1L-1AA in my pocket all day everyday but trying to find it in the dark in a junk drawer or sock drawer may be a challenge.

    I also have a Streamlight Seige and it's great for area light. Would recommend.

    For a general household handheld maybe one of the bigger more brightly covered polymer flashlights?
