Folks carry that with which they are comfortable. If I were hiking or fishing in black bear or cougar country and using hot 38 Spl ammo, I would select a 4 inch K frame size Smith, Ruger Security-six, or GP100. These revolvers have sufficient heft to increase one's chances of placing shots in a vital area.

I wouldn’t run much of that in a gun designed to be carried concealed (i.e. K-frame or smaller.)

Of course at $2 a pop, I doubt anyone’s going to shoot much of it.
