The practical me says a Macro lower/XL upper or a G19 with a comp. Emotional me says to check out a Staccato CS.

Likes pretty much everything in every caliber.
They're a little chunky in the slide, but incredible shooters. Roughly the size of a G19. Same capacity. Mine has been 100% reliable in 2000+ rounds.

Edit: I missed what you said about personal threat level. If I felt personally threatened I’d probably carry a full size pistol with a spare mag.
If you are willing to put up with the weight of a metal gun that opens up the field of choices even further.
Guns I’ve used AIWB that I like: Beretta PX4 Compact Carry, Glock 19 with a striker control device.
I shot and enjoyed a CZ P09 and suspect the P07 would be a great carry gun but I’ve never tried it.
Guns I don’t like for AIWB: striker fired guns without a striker control device or at least a manual safety.

I've had my PX4 compact 9mm for about a year now. Drop in a Beretta OEM D-spring PX4 specific and the double action pull is greatly helped. Below is the link to the spring. Folks on this forum provided me this spring info and boy were they right about the DA improvement.

My personal choice is the P-07, Prograde. The Langdon p30 LEM is awesome as well.

Threats to manage? Or
Threats to shoot?
Can’t imagine why you would be looking for a different gun with a heightened threat environment. Prudency would dictate using something you’re familiar with and practicing more and making sure you have three copies of it. A new platform can take several weeks to vet and may not work for you and you may have to try another one.
That is if you cannot mitigate the threat by getting a new job or moving, etc. because that would be the wisest.
Stay safe!
The VP9 had a couple of stovepipes on the first outing with 115 grain. It’s ran everything since.
The M&P got an APEX duty/carry trigger kit. It’s ran 100% from the first shot.
Unless you can run a paddle mag release like a boss, I’d opt for the Smith. HK does make a VP9 with a button mag release IIRC.
I wouldn’t hesitate to take either one of these into harm’s way.
Regards.
I would 100% start witha Macro grip module and mag and see if that gets you where you want.
In terms of grip angle to a P365XL, the P229 and CZ P01 point pretty similarly to it.
The 2011s will point a little low.
The X9 is a great shooter though.
