I think MLOK makes sense because they’re not true MLOK. They’re MLOK with a picatinny rail across the top. From a weight / ergonomics perspective it’s great.

I have an old VTAC rail on a BCM mid length. If you squint real hard - you’ll realize it’s almost the same thing rail with slot mounts (that are different from MLOK, but visually basically the same) and a picatinny rail across the top.

It just makes sense and has for a long time. Unless you want your light somewhere else on the gun.

Now, where it fails is it attaches to a traditional barrel nut and doesn’t give a lot of repeatability for POI/POA or rigidity for IR.

But, I shoot steel cased ammo, within 100 yards almost exclusively, and only have a WML on one gun. So it’s diminishing returns and thus I haven’t gone to rails on all my guns. At this point - I’d just buy a factory AR with the rail I liked or as close to it as possible.

Lots of great info in this thread.
    God Bless,

    Brandon

I spoke with a guy who's worked at Daniel Defense for 17 years and asked him about midlength vs carbine. He said that several tests have been conducted in the past several years and that, while the results are not public, the midlength outperforms the carbine length in every way in terms of reliability and durability. While my carbine gas LE6920 has been extremely reliable, I figure I'll give midlength a go this time, since Daniel Defense basically wrote the specs on how to properly gas a midlength barrel with their URGI contract.

So now it's between the RIS III Mlok, or a DD M4v9 with a freefloat quad rail. I've been partial to quadrails my whole life (my LE6920 still has a KAC RAS M4 and my M16A4 surplus upper will has the KAC RAS M5), I like how bombproof they are and in military testing they still outperform even the toughest Mlok rails tested in terms of deflection. But I realize the future is now and Mlok is the standard. The v9 is also about $1600 while the DD4 RIS III would end up about $2300. That's enough difference for a couple of cases of ammo, or some ammo and a good optic.

A few months ago I was out shooting my LE6920 at the range, with the KAC quad rail and all. Someone came up to me and said how it was a cool "retro" AR, and I was confused at first. When I got this gun and set it up, it was cutting edge. Now it's considered "early GWoT retro". I'm only 30 years old and I feel old.
You feel old? I have a Glock 17 older than you… and a Glock 19 about your age…

After a few years of using their customers as beta testers, LWRC makes decent functional guns though I personally find the overpriced for what they are. I also see no reason to run a proprietary attachment system in 2022 when M lock is available as a free open source standard.

Agreed. I got the M-Lok version. It was between this and the Colt FBI with Geissele rail edition.

You would care more if you were a lefty. I shoot long guns lefty, and while I've adapted to using our rifles with the only ambi control being the safety,, it would be nice to have a more lefty friendly rifle. Management finally approved use of some ambitious charging handles this year, so that's nice.

I haven't been to a carbine class in years but in the group of guys I shoot with and see at the range, I rarely see a Colt anymore. Not saying that's good or bad, it is just hard to give feedback based on personal experience. The last Colt I saw was a well used 6920 with an LPVO. No fault of the experienced shooter, it wouldn't hold a group on a 5" circle at 180 yards.

Last week I was out at the range with my son and his friends. This is the younger generation, between 20-30 years of age. Most of them are running a combo. My son runs an LMT MARS-L lower with a 11.5" BCM upper. His friends had a complete Radian setup, a build made out of components manufactured by 4 or 5 different companies, and an unknown lower with a Triarc upper. All of them ran without an issue. The Radian ran suppressed or unsupressed.

The latter "combo" AR is mostly what I see these days. Most of the issues I see are when someone decides to swap a trigger or put in an adjustable gas block, etc and they screw up the installation.

Someone up thread said something to the effect that DD wasn’t “premium”. For me, 2x the base is “premium” and like you at that point it pony up the 3x for this.

I find myself moving in that same direction as well.

Thank you SwampDweller and all the contributors to the thread.Regarding Daniel Defense is the consensus that the quad rail is stronger than the RIS III rail?Comparing 14.5" vs 16" is there any appreciable difference in performance?thank you all again.
