I had an OP a long time ago. It had some issues and it got sold but I really liked it.

I wish colt would start making them again without all the old issues.

This 1930s era Colt Official Police .38 Special is stamped JPD on the bottom of it.

It appears, based on the wear pattern on the grips to have been carried in a flap holster for a long time.

For a number of years it was the "house gun" for the wife, both before we got married and after, as it was all I could afford and I picked it up at a very inexpensive prices from my gunsmith's shop. Shoots extremely well. Plus the large frame of the Colt OP allows some very heavy loads, even though I tend to run standard velocity loads through it the majority of the time.

I carried a shrouded Agent in the early 90s as a backup to my Model 10. Trigger serrations removed, a sweet action job and a serrated front sight. But I shot/dryfired it out of time twice and the shroud ate the base of my thumb shooting +P so it went down the road...
I thought the Colt's were the perfect size for a compact .38, much easier to shoot well than a J-frame and being able to use the same speedloaders as my service pistol was a big bonus as a backup gun.

Before it was called the OP it was the Army Special .38.

This one was made in 1919. Five inch barrel.

My fathers guns from the end of his career in the Cincinnati Police Dept.
Top gun is S&W 65.2. His last duty gun at retirement in 1981 before they went to S&W semi autos. Left side stamped CPD.
Bottom is S&W M&P (some call them pre model 10) from 1956. He purchased it when he joined the force for use as his off duty carry gun. I've fired them both more than he ever did.
At 96 he is the oldest living retired CPD officer.

Nope. The OP frame size was the basis for the Python, so a Python holster would work. Of course, you could do like I did and get a dedicated OP holster from Bell Charter Oaks.
