Can I use this on a smaller propane tank?

Due to a couple weird factors the propane company won't fill the tank.

I rent and the landlord doesn't have the documents to prove who owns it.

Anyways. The only thing I use propane for is a wood stove heater so it's not a big deal. I just want a backup to our oil furnace.

Can I just attach this to a smaller tank or do I need one meant for a smaller tank?

If I understand you right, you're asking if you can attach the regulator to a smaller tank. Assuming you're not mixing liquid and vapor withdrawal ports, and the threads are the same....sure, it'll work. There are calculators online to determine tank size needed per certain withdrawal rates which are meant to keep your equipment from freezing up because the tank can't vaporize / gas off fast enough to keep up.

Propane isn't like acetylene which will destabilize and go off like a bomb if you exceed safe withdrawal rates.

The regulator in the picture looks like the ones I've seen on tanks as small as 100 pounders before. Usually 20 pounders have the baby regs on them.
