Switched to 9mm Major, major (badabum) problems abound!

latest match shot at the Marysville, WA range. Had lots of problems with my mags because I switched my top-end to 9mm major. Also, I think my recoil spring is too light, I'm running 8lbs, that could explain why I'm not chambering the round consistently, that or I need to get a U-Die to make sure the brass is sized properly.

What will a U-Die do for you that say my Dillon re-sizing die won't do? Pardon my ignorance, but I just started shooting and loading 9 Major.

I am also considering trimming all of my Major brass to the same/optimal length as I am getting a lot of variation (+/- .15") in COAL. I didn't have any issues with any of the loads this weekend, but I don't want to take the chance, especially since I plan on upping the powder charge.

Are you running mags with a spacer, or without? I have some of each, but not sold on either just yet.

Everyone I asked, and even some who I didn't insisted on my running a 9# recoil spring for Major. Don't know what a pound would do, but I don't know jack about guns really. I just shoot them.
You can get much more of what you want with a kind word and a gun, than with a kind word alone.

The U-die is undersized by 0.001" so that the brass will be ever so slightly smaller. It also sizes the brass a lot lower down the case to remove the "glock bulge". (http://www.egwguns.com/undersized-re...eloading-dies/)

I'm running SV mags so I don't need to use spacers. I guess I have to raise the OAL a little to 1.170 instead of 1.165 that I'm using now.

Would you mind sharing some load data? Off line if you prefer. I am using 7.0 grains of AutoComp behind a MT Gold 124 with Federal SPP's at 1.160" OAL. But I am getting a lot of variation in OAL, I am guessing due to different types of once fired. Do you trim to a standard length or just roll them as they come?

Gun runs great even with the variety of OAL's, but seems the SV mag rattles more than the STI's with rounds "flopping" inside the tube. Do I need to increase my OAL to help prevent this?

I'm using MG 124gr CMJs, RP once fired brass, Winchester Small Rifle Primer, 8gr of HS-6 with an OAL of 1.165".

I've been told that 1.170 is optimal.

SV mags don't require a spacer while the STI mags have to, and I believe the longer you can load the rounds, the better.

    Thanks.

My COAL varies between 1.155 and 1.170", as I said, likely due to variations in brass. It is mixed bag of S&B, Aguilla, Win, Federal, etc. None have affected feeding, though I will lean towards loading longer vs. shorter, especially as I begin to work up to something along the lines of 7.5 grains of AutoComp. I think I will trim to a standard length for the brass.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Sean, If you don't do it you might try lubing your brass. That may (it did for me) eliminate stickiness in cycling the press to reduce variation in where the press stops which might explain OAL problems.

Robot, Did you check if the "bad" rounds fit in your chamber. If a few were inadequately sized that would explain it. If that's the case you might just need to re-adjust your sizing die with all stations on your press full to ensure proper sizing while cycling the press. Lubing the brass would help there too.

Lots of folks adjust the sizing die with just a case in that station then when all the stations are full you lose a few hundredths or more to the increased resistance of everything being done at once. I ran into that myself. Now I do multiple final adjustments of all my dies incrementally with all stations full. Quality and consistency has improved for me.

Another explanation could be your 8 lb recoil spring being overpowered by the extractor causing the case rim to get stuck before the round fully chambers. Lubing the brass and doing a final re-adjustment of the sizing die with all stations on your press may help if you haven't done that yet.
