    Sharpmaker Question V2

So I have been using my Sharpmaker and been fairly happy. I have added the super fine ceramics in addition to the medium and fine that came with the basic unit. Really solid results with my VG 10 Spydercos and Sandivik 14C28 Kershaw as well as the Clinch Pick.

I have taken to keeping it set up at my office.

Question: can I merely do 10ish passes per side with the super fines on the tri angle edge > as opposed to also the flat?

I seem to have more control that way and I am getting flick of the wrist cuts on copy paper and forearm hair shaving sharpness.

Am I some how damaging the blade by NOT also doing the flat side too?

    Thx

    DB

If you're getting good results, I'd say stick with it.

That said, I rarely use the corners and mostly just use the flats on the brown rods (alone). I don't even go finer than that these days. (I like a bit more bite...)

If it works, don't second guess yourself. With the corners, it's a bit harder to maintain a consistent angle, generally speaking, and you have to moderate the force since it puts a lot of pressure on the edge in one place.

Sounds like you're doing just fine.

Some times I do the same, depending on the blade.
I think as long as the blade is continuously moving back
to front keeping a consistent edge, it works pretty well.
Once I get a knife profiled on my KME, the Sharpmaker
does an outstanding job maintaining the edge.

Mine needs cleaned fairly quickly, I wish there was a better alternative for a quick touch up.

There are alternatives, but it depends what you are looking for...something guided, or freehand?

Diamond hones, both plated and bonded are easy to work with and maintain.

Give us an idea so we can help direct you.

DMT has a couple of options for you to consider:

    https://www.amazon.com/DMT-Diamond-M...657814&sr=8-37

    or

    https://www.amazon.com/DMT-MAGKIT-4-...s%2C104&sr=8-1

These hones can be used freehand or with the guide. Of the two, I prefer the second option.

    @LittleLebowski

As a gadget guy, you might like this more than the other alternatives. A lot of my brethren on bladeforums have been very pleased with it. (I have no personal experience.)

I clean them with a white eraser frequently and bar keepers friend ever so often.

@blues, what about this one? It looks good for small knives.

Basically the same as the first link I posted above.

Personally, I prefer the magna-guide with the diafolds from my limited usage of both methods. Two ways of doing the same thing. It'll come down to personal preference. (I get better "visibility" with the magna-guide, so I can track the sharpening stroke more precisely. But it's six of one, half dozen of the other.)
