    .357 XTP Variants...Update

Ran the quick test. 13.5@1190fps seems the best of the three. Running about 1 3/4” at 20yds. I might do some research and go a bit above 14.0 and see if I can find the next happy spot. The 13.0 ran about 1170fps and the 14.0 about 1210fps on average.

I dragged along a box of the Lyman 358156 GC’s. Pretty impressive performance from them. I’m running 15.3gr of H110 with those. They clocked at an average of just over 1280fps and all (12 rounds) went into a group just shy of 2”. A couple of pulled shots on my part, the rest were basically one big hole. I had shot this loading on an indoor range in the spring, but didn’t run them over a chrony. I need to make more of these! I had similar performance from the standard #358156 (non gas checked) using .38spl cases and running 10.5gr of 2400. 1-1 1/2” groups with those at 15yds IIRC...
Working diligently to enlarge my group size.

I’ve settled on 14gr if 2400 with a 158gr HPXTP for my 6” 686. Here are a couple of the targets from it. Name: 055DF12C-962C-4324-8965-62FA1BD59894.jpg

First pic has a group at 13.5 as well. Best I can recall there are 8/10 in the red circle with the 14gr load at 15 paces, I don’t remember throwing any of them and I usually shoot two groups of five. Second pic is 10 rounds at 25 paces. I need to chrono them and see where they are at.

I’d bet around the same speed. I used magnum primers. I might try standard as I read (on the in-ter-net) that standard gives better results... Might try H110 too.

Hell...if I knew the #358156’s were clocking so fast, I might not have ordered the XTPs up. Always nice to have options tho.

    Oops...you’re running 6”. Nevermind.

Those were loaded with standard primers. I’ve heard good things about H110 but haven’t tried it myself yet. I’ve never tried the #358156’s. They are a classic but I agree, options are nice.

Mine is a 6”. One of these days I’ll chrono them and see where they are at.
