It sounds like one of the juveniles was on the receiving end of some brutal child abuse. Not an excuse for criminality, but there's more going on than poor impulse control.

Judge Bailey acknowledged that the teen was abused by his biological parents, and beaten so badly at age six, that he was unrecognizable. His attorney, Mandy McKellar said he was exposed to drugs in utero.
I think there's is an excessive amount of empirical data showing that these "mitigating" facts are actually damning facts, and should be reflected in the decision to remove them from contact with society.
Lots of abused people in this world, and most don't commit heinous crimes.
He did. Ergo, he wanted to.
He will re-offend, likely as soon as he can, frequently and more violently until killed, crippled or caged.
Cage him now until he ages out. Then give him one chance.
Or do the math in societal damage, lost business, and sheer human misery that it is a moral certainty, nearly a mathematical one, that he will inflict on everyone.
Or, Mr. fucking judge, prosecutor or parole board member-you house him in your gated community. Put some skin in your liberal morality play.
